HDD 1Terabytes were weak and are more than expensive to replace ?

Posted by: Yvan on 06 May 2017

Hello everyone,

This february I had to send my Naim HDX to the hospital. It came back with a new tray system for the CD reader, and new power supply and board...  about 800 CHF costs...    ok, I had it since 2010... seven years of good and loyal services...

But lately, it went down more and more frequently. I tried to find the cause or a process that could re-create the problem on purpose, without being able to locate anything in that way. A reset did usually the trick and it was up again for few days. Finally, one 'fine' day, it didn't want to wake up again. So...  let's get it back to the reseller again.

It turns out it was the hard-drive this time...  a HDD 1 Terabytes.  When the technician told me the price of the replacement piece, I was like 'ouuuuuuuch!!!'.   1300 CHF...   ok ok, on these 1300, they are about 250 CHF as a tax for the artists rights organization in Switzerland (Suisa). But that’s still a 1150CHF HDD of 1T, and I can easily find such HDD of 1T for 100CHF, maybe 250CHF for a really good one. Sooo... can any of you tell me:

- how come it's so expensive for a HDX drive ?

- how many of you have had problems with the 1Tera drives of Naim ?   (I read somewhere that Naim had many problem with them drives...)

Thanks in advance !

I'm pretty sure the replacement would be the current 2TB version, not that this explains the price!

Some have them converted to run with an external NAS drive, might be an option for you to consider.

Yes, the replacement is a 2TB version, my bad, sorry for this mistake.   And yes, it still doesn't explain the price.  I'm already having all my music on a Nas and not on the HDD of the Naim device. I told this to my reseller and asked if there's a way to get just a small hard drive for they need one to put the OS of the HDX... but no, the only hard drive they do offer is the 2TB :-(

Not that it helps you now that your wonga (CHFs) has left your wallet, but I had mine converted to an SSD model at a cost of around CHF830  (GBP650).  Like you, all my music files were (and still are) on a NAS drive so I didn't need the HDD space.

Since then I've swapped my HDX for an NS01, which is functionally the same as an HDX (but less expensive to buy).  The NS01 doesn't have the pretty display that the HDX does, but that was somewhat useless to me anyway since my eyesight wasn't good enough to read the HDX display from my seated position.

Let's hope your newly serviced HDX runs for another six or seven years; at that point you'll want to replace it with one of these new Core devices where the disk you choose is up to you, not Naim, so you save a thousand Swiss francs or so whenever you want to change the hard drive  (great idea Naim, by the way).

Meanwhile you'll be enjoying your 'new' HDX and I'll be enjoying my NS01, neither of us using the internal hard drive and both of us waiting for the next time our unit fails so that we can replace them with a brand new, and different shaped*, black box.

* why, oh why, Naim did you change the footprint of the new range?  It doesn't look right on a Fraim and it doesn't look right when seated alongside the rest of the product range.   Mind you, I suppose it looks OK when located next to the Statement range.

I suppose that Naim Sq would change both disks so you  would still have 2 2 tb disks inside. Still expensive and probably the reason for the change to a server with a user replaceable hd in the Core.

Claus, I think you only get a single 2TB disk. It would have the benefit of a downloads folder though, which I believe was not an option for earlier versions.

It is a bit confusing, and it may depend on how old the unit is. My 2011 ns01 that originally came with 2 1 TB disks has been updated with a 2 TB disk and under system status in the dtc I can see that the local backup disk is also 2 tb.

it seems expensive, but you say "new tray, new power supply, and 2tb", so you have a brand new hdx now...   but i can't tell if i would  make this repair.  I have unitserve hdd myself, one year old. I really don't know yet what i will do if my hdd will broke: repair for around 1000 pounds or buy a uniticore for 2000 pounds?  I don't want a nas for myself and the core is a not finished product yet, with a lot of bugs....

So maybe, today, i would have done this repair like you.

ChrisSu, what's the benefit of a downloads folder you're thinking of ?  Is there just a folder on the 2T disk ?  How to use it and what's the benefit ?

The downloads folder is for storing music other than CD rips, such as downloads that are purchased online. With the original Naim ripper/servers, this was not possible, but it was added when the 2TB drive replaced the older 1TB version.
