Naim app stops finding content in shared folder

Posted by: Will on 07 May 2017

This is a weird one.  And annoying.  I bought a Uniti Core recently to replace a Unitiserve, and have been using my Synology NAS for music storage (no internal drive in the Core).  I have my music files in a few different shared folders on the NAS, with the bulk in one folder but a few other files in different folders.  All of these folders are selected to be scanned in the Naim iOS app, and for awhile all the music files showed up on the app.  However, about 2 weeks ago the app lost track of all of the files in one of the shared folders on the NAS (despite the fact that the folder was still selected with a green checkmark in the scanned folders section of the Naim app).  Unfortunately, this folder had most of the albums in it, so I could no longer access most of my music through the Naim app.  Oddly, the music in the other folders remained visible and playable via the app.

I tried everything I could think of to troubleshoot this; I uninstalled/reinstalled the app. I unselected all of the shared folders and reselected them. I rebooted the Core.  And I did a reset on the Core (hold the power button while unplugging and replugging the mains).  Nothing helped.  All of the music in that folder remained invisible to the app and unplayable.  Eventually I just dragged and dropped all of those albums into one of the folders that still worked, and then all my music showed up again.

Everything was fine after this until today when I updated the firmware on the Core, and the same damn thing happened again.  All of the music on this folder became invisible again in the app, and I had to drag and drop all of the files into one of the other folders that the app was still able to see.

Why the heck is the Naim app randomly losing the ability to see the files in a shared folder?  The first time this happened for no reason that I can ascertain; I just came home from work and all my music was inaccessible.  Today, it may have been related to updating the Core firmware.  Or not; maybe it was a coincidence.

FWIW, all of the music in the STORE folder has remained visible all along; it's just the SHARE folders that are having the issue.  So far.

Anybody else have this issue?  Any way to stop it from happening?  I'm running out of shared folders into which I can transfer all of my music.....

I haven't seen this problem but then my system works differently to yours. But did you try going into the Core setup and redefine the shares as music shares? You have to tell the Core which music shares to include in its scan.

Hi David-  Thanks for your reply.  Yes, I have gone through the setup process and made sure the folders in question are included in the share scan (the green checkbox is next to each of the folders containing music).  This includes the folder containing most of my music which is the folder the Core no longer sees.

I'm afraid I don't have any other suggestions except that it would be worth ringing Naim support and talk it through with Phil Harris. The phone number is in the sticky about Naim support at the top of the forum.

I've also had a problem similar to Will's.  When it originally happened it got resolved by a series of steps recommended by Phil H, who said:

"try the following for me…

1)      Turn off your NAS,

 2)      Turn off your Core by pulling the power lead out of the back of the unit,

 3)      Press and hold the power button on the front of the unit whilst plugging in the power lead,

 4)      Keep the power button held down, the Core will flash the white LED over the front USB port once then after about twenty seconds it will flash that same LED several times, once this has happened you can release the power button,

 5)      Now take a USB stick and format it in your PC / Mac so that it is blank,

 6)      Insert it in the Core and use the app to set up a store on it.

 7)      Now try ripping a CD … does it appear?

I realize this is what you have been doing but in turning off the NAS and doing a factory reset on the core then you clear out any “old” store references – what I’m wondering is if it’s got some reference to an older store still sat there somewhere.

Doing this won’t kill anything from the CDs you have previously ripped to your NAS … if you power up the NAS again, remove the USB drive and do another factory reset of the Core it should pick up the NAS as a store once more."

At the time of the original problem, that worked fine - but, having updated to latest versions of both firmware and App, the problem of the music shares not showing up has re-emerged; but this time it won't go away.  Oddly, although the app claims that it can't see the NaimRips folder (which is where my CD rips go), it still rips happily to it.

The next thing I'm now trying to do is to get the Naim kit to watch other folders on the NAS and to index and play the music on them.  Roon, operating on the same network can see them fine - but the Naim App currently can't.

I've written to Phil H (late yesterday) to get a response.  Will update the post when we get a resolution.

Hi, was wondering why you replaced the US with the Core....

Was there something wrong with the US?

If the US is working as it was designed to do, then the Core is NOT needed....?

The Unitiserve broke.  Repeatedly.  I finally gave up on it.

I said I'd post again when I'd had the chance for a conversation with, and hopefully a fix from, Phil H at support.  Alas, life has become more complicated, with a possible problem with the latest (4.3.3) firmware for the QNAP NAS.  Notes as follows:

- Shares on the NAS are only intermittently visible via the Naim App, although they seem to be set up correctly in the QNAP

- 'Normal' ripping to a share (set up as a store when I could see it) works fine, and the files appear in the NAS File Manager and in the Mac Finder

- When the App is actually 'seeing' the various shares, both import (from other shares) and share scanning appears to work ok (This comment is based on limited tests so far, when the kit happens to decide to behave)

- When the App can't see the shares, I'm obviously completely stuck apart from CD ripping

- Various kinds of reset on the Core sometimes result in being able to see the shares; but it doesn't sustain for long.

Phil tells me that there have been other reports of problems thought to be associated with the latest QNAP firmware update, and he has now put the problem to the software team.  No estimated date for resolution.

My purpose in buying the Core was to make the whole CD ripping / client experience less geeky for the rest of the family, so this is obviously a major set-back.  Now looking at whether to simply run the Core with an internal drive (so no excuses, guys)

Mikey, hold that thought. I am also currently experiencing big issues with core since new so fare update, and problems with my INTERNAL drive access. Only able to see around 1/3 of my files. Software team also working on this solution, so problem may a global one

Helpful input, thanks CBR600.  Will hold off from draconian action, but v frustrating
