Chrome bumper power supplies

I have a snaps cap - snaps converted to a dual 24v rail by naim - comparable to a flat cap so I'm told. The SQ improvement over the nap (140) powering the nac (42.5) is a definite upgrade in SQ.

I've measured the 2 rails from the snaps cap and I'm getting 24.13v and 24.37v

Also the voltage from the nap - 24.52v

I've recently acquired a hicap, serviced about 5 years ago apparently. It sounds a bit harsh to me. I measured the output voltages and I'm getting 25.15v and 25.49v.

Also, I opened her up and I'm like 'all that for a nac?!'.

The SQ is better with the snaps cap than the hicap.

Is the higher voltage from the hicap a problem?

What do you think?

Is it possible to check the history of the Hicap? There are lots out there that have had DIY recaps so it can be tricky to know exactly what you have. A Hicap should be a clear improvement over a dual railed snaps.

The 'exact' voltage is not relevant here, IMO. All are '24V DC'.

As [@mention:4804681823084713] say, better to check the history of the HiCap.

I have had at least three SNAPS in my life, the last two of which in recent years. They were both recapped and dual railed by an – ehm - expert technician.

I too think that under certain circumstances, and with proper matching gear – let's say CB and vinyl – the SNAPs is better sounding and more musical than the HiCap. I have always thought that part of the merit was the Holden&Fisher transformer, same as the one used in the NAP110. But I could be wrong. Anyway, I (and a few other people) think that a dual rail SNAPS is a lot better than a FlatCap, so whatever you decide, keep yours, you'll always have a use for it and won't regret having sold it.

The exact ouput volltage is irrevelent as lomg as it is extremly stable.IIRC it should be within a + 5% tolerance ( between 24 and 25 2v).
