What music would you want to be played at your funeral?
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 May 2017
Since my near death experience last August, I've pondered a few times on the music I want to be played at my funeral. I chose the music for my Dad's but I'd rather choose my own. Perhaps nobody has thought of this, but if so, it would be interesting to read your choices.
Billy Bragg's recording of Blake's Jerusalem
Joy Division's Atmosphere
The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
A recording of The Folks Who Live on The Hill
Something by Bach, possibly one of the violin sonatas
The last two are a work in progress.
"I don't want to achieve immortality throgh my work; I want to achieve immortality by not dying" - Woody Allen.
Having recently had my right knee and left hip successfully replaced, I'm intending to have my bodily parts changed as they fail, thus assuring my immortality. But if I'm unlucky enough to be struck by a falling bolt from the International Space Station, maybe they can play Alan Parsons' "Time" from Turn of a Friendly Card at my funeral.
Steve Reich's "Drumming" the uncut 80 minute version performed live. Followed by Feldman's "Piano and String Quartet"
I did request the family play 2112, Free Bird and Stairway to Heaven.
That's over an hour so service might have to move outside.Assuming anyone turns up or are still around after the RUSH piece.
Tony M if you get any more bits done you can do a real Terminator from the fire!

Rather than be cremated or buried, I've decided to be - dissolved! It's the latest thing apparently, supposedly more environmentally friendly.
California Saga - California by the Beach Boys
"Water, water get yourself in the cool, clear, water
The sun shines brightly down on Penny's place
The sun shines brightly down on the bay
The air's so clean it'll just take your mind away
Take your mind away
Take your mind away ..."
And some Julian Bream playing Granados.
Maybe "enjoy the silence" from Depeche Mode
Don't care I will be dead......
Python's Always Look On The Bright Side of Life.
Radiohead - Sail to the Moon ...
Probably what I chose for my mother's funeral.
"Have I told you lately" by Van Morrison.
Just a sentimental old fool.
Mike-B posted:Thought provoking & yes the jokey side has to be included. TBH I haven't really thought about it, but the subject did cross my mind recently after the funeral of my cousin. She was fit as a fiddle, county class badminton player including into seniors, she biked everywhere, never smoked anything ever, then diagnosed with lung cancer & was gone in a few months. She planned her own funeral & included some really tasteful mood provoking classics, jazz & popular music, then for the ceremony departure music she played Abba's 'Dancing Queen' .....its never been the same since each time I hear it.
They played Albatross at my uncle's funeral as we walked out of the church - the twangy guitar notes floating in the autumn air.
Still brings a lump to my throat 25 years later whenever I hear it. He died of a single heart attack at the age of 38!

We were invited to the funeral of one of our good customers (we have pub). This gentleman was full of humour and we walked out at the end of the funeral to 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life'. it was poignant and perfect. He would have loved to have seen all those many smiling faces, which was of course what he planned.
In Paradisum from Durufle's Requiem, and Disco Inferno by Trammps.

I've thought about it a number of times. I chose the only two pieces for my dearest friend's cremation, and they were The B.'s Free as a bird and Across the Universe – mine and his preferred B. songs.
As for myself, supposing a very short, totally unreligious cremation, I have thought (in no special order):
Kurt Weill's Kannonen song, from the Three pennies opera.
Joni Mitchell's Both sides now
Nikolai Kedrov's Otče Naš (our Father).
If it had to be just one, in spite of my total atheism, it would be Otče Naš.
I have been to a few funerals recently and came to the conclusion that I would rather the money be spent by family on a nice holiday and remember me that way, some time after the event. They can scatter my ashes as they see fit. This is now in my will, people obviously have other views and that's fine......

Toccata and Fugue in D- Minor. Would raise a few eyebrows, especially if given from a humongous organ in a cathedral. And played by Damien Hirst or the ghosts of Vincent price and boris Karloff. Sorry my gothic imagination is getting carried away.

The Smiths - Heaven knows I'm miserable now
No funeral, just a celebration of friends. when I'm listeing to something that really gets to me I think I'll remember that. At 63 it's not possible to remember those things, tho something positive and Louie Armstrong is a great one.
Interesting post......, and difficult to answer. Let's say I have a list of things I would consider, but not yet made up my mind. In no particular order.......
Oscar Peterson Corcovado from We get Requests
Nigel Kennedy's Version
More to follow...
1, 2 and 3 Dr. John to send everybody off to the pub!
Buried Alive , Venom
Karl
Beatles "I'm A Loser" and Elton's "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding".
Beethoven String Quartet No 15 in A minor Op 132 - Slow movement played by the Busch Quartet - no prayers or anything else; just the music

I've had to select funeral music on two occasions - in both cases the deceased left no wishes. No idea what I'd like.
Choices:
Carmen Mcrae: Last Night When We Were Young
Keith Jarrett: The Way You Look Tonight (solo piano)
and
Edith Piaf: Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien
Chopin: Nocturnes
