Naim ARO. How much??? !!!

Posted by: Marksnaim on 17 May 2017

Just saw a posting on the well known auction site for an Aro. The price nearly made me spit my tea out! Surely it can't be worth that? It's years since I heard one so memory isn't great but as I recall it was a worthy alternative to the Ekos. Not better or worse necessarily, but very different. I preferred the Ekos at the time but could see the attraction. You could get a good Ekos for half that much. Well I did anyway.

It's worth what someone is willing to pay...Only about 1500 produced ,I believe ,so a bit of a "limited" supply. If you like what the Aro does on an LP12 there really are no substitutes .

I expect it will sell, despite the fact that the seller is limiting his market by his preference for collection. FWIW I had to pay more than that for my Aro two years ago, but that was 'new old' stock still sealed in the box. Still somewhat less than the price of an Ekos SE though and, as Mark says, if you like what it does, there's no substitute. And besides, it looks so cool too!

audio aurigami pu7 arm- in production and very much like the aro....( around 2000 pounds). some good reviews of this arm on the net.

Yes, AO arm is very similar and has had some positive feedback. Doesn't touch the Aro in cool factor though  ! The Aro just looks right on an LP12. Naim designed and built to get the best out of your cartridge.

I wouldn't be able to sleep at night with 3 LP 12's. I'll bet he doesn't have little kids or cats.

Well, truth be told, one of them is "on loan" to my teenage son. Those of you with children understand ..as far as he is concerned,  he already owns it .  No cats though !

i see that you solved the problem : you have no more a turntable left....

For me i can't live without, even if 90% of my time music is spent on digital. But to hear my favorite 70's albums, my nds/555 dr is far behind....It is like photos on first ipad and on ipad pro...

Don't know how much it's going for on eBay  but could imagine it's over £2000.

As other posters have said if you like what it does on the LP12 go for it.

It seems reasonable value. The Linn Akito retails for £17OO and although a reasonable arm no way in the same class as a ARO.I appreciate that Linn have their dealer margins etc but does seem greedy. If you consider you could get a Rega RP 8 with arm for the same price as an Akito.

I don't think I could justify over£2k for what would be a sideways move for me. I already like what my Ekos does andnot bring able to do a dem means it would feel very risky.

It may be worth a trip to Cymbiosis. I suspect that Peter would be able to offer a comparative demo - he has around 18 different LP12 builds. You might find you enjoy what the Aro does.

That's a thought Clive. I was thinking of heading up there to see the Simrack and try to compare it against Fraim. I could kill two birds with one stone. It's quite a long way for me so I'd probably look to combine it with a weekend break. On the other hand...I'd need to change my Kore to an Aro version. Which knowing what my will power is like would mean I would walk away with a Keel and Radikal at the same time

It's a slippery slope!

I've heard someone on this forum somewhere saying hifi is not an investment.

I bought an Aro new in 1994 for a bit under 700 ukp.

I wish I still had it.

I can't imagine it ever going down in value. Unlike John Lewis toilet brushes.

That's just money down the pan! (Sorry I stole that joke)

Mark, Following the work from the inside outwards principle (and assuming your LP12 in your profile is accurate) surely a Radikal beckons rather than any arm fannying.

Yup there's nowt quite like the panic which can be induced by the sight of a cat walking across the platter - thankfully I had removed the LP.

Platter bounced well, though

That's the plan Chris. I'm actually quite happy with my Ekos. It went back to Linn for new bearings when I purchased it so it should be good for a few years yet.

Thank you. I'm rather hoping to take my own advice on this topic too.

If I were using a TT and read MarKus Sauer's review of the ARO on Stereophile, June 5th 1995 issue, I think I'd buy it.

And if Naim were to release an ARO II then......

Now that would be a Babel fish event

What is an " OS Aro" that can be bought new for an Orb?

After many years with his ARO, Markus Sauer switched to an  Alphason HR 100s tonearm, for reasons unknown to me. His ARO review is still a good informative read. The only thing I would add to is, is that the ARO does work on acrylic mounting plates, it sure did on my dps.
