? For QNAP folks using Minim and Minimwatch

Did you have issues with Minimwatch finding the server?
I have a QNAP running Minim. It works fine with the Naim app and Naim streamer. I just can't get Minimwatch to link up with the Qnap on my laptop. The Minimwatch icon on my laptop is gray and I can't change any settings. All I want to do is have Minim transcode to WAV.
Thanks in advance for any input
I just get this
If you ask on the Minim forum, I'm sure Simon will sort you out. It's very likely a Java issue.
As an aside, I got fed up with problems of the sort you are experiencing, so I switched to Asset. It has some useful extra functionality such as latest albums, and scans new albums in about 30 seconds. And you can control it from your iPad if you buy a link on your screen. Transcoding is by ticking a box rather than entering a line of code.

No issues here: Minimwatch has been running smoothly on my laptop for meanwhile more than one year. As far as I can tell, the Minimwatch icon stays always gray. But you should see one icon (green, yellow or red) for each MinimServer instance running on devices connected to the LAN. At home, these are for me four. When offline, I just see one icon for the MinimServer process running on the laptop itself. My Minimwatch log file reports events like
No subnet is active
Media server unavailable: MinimServer[fitpc3]
Active subnet is 192.168.178.0
Selected media server: MinimServer[cirrus]
MinimServer[cirrus] is running
MinimServer[fitpc3] is running
MinimServer[rpi] is running
tracking usual suspend/resume cycles or getting disconnected from my home network. I do not see any messages involving port 9791 in my log files. I would follow HH's suggestion and require support on the Minim forum.
You could also install and run Minimserver on your laptop to make sure that Minimwatch does at least see that process. I find it anyway very useful to have an instance of MinimServer running on my laptop: whenever I test a new setup or feature (transcoding, index aliasing, sorting, etc.) I do so first on my laptop.
In order to get Minim transcode to WAV you have to do two things: 1) install Minimstreamer and 2) add "flac:wav" to the "stream.transcode" field in the "System" section of the "Properties" menu. You will only see the "stream.transcode" field at the bottom of the "System" section after you have installed Minimstreamer.
Once you have managed to get Minimwatch displaying the icon for your running Minimserver instance, you can do 1) and 2) in two clicks after opening the "Properties" dialogue on the MinimServer icon.

Thanks for the replies. I figured it out. I have to plug the ethernet cable from my laptop directly into the switch that connects the Qnap and 172

Of course your laptop has to be connected to the same network to which the Qnap is connected for Minimwatch to discover the MinimServer process running on the Qnap. I have all my devices on the same 5GHz wireless and no wired connections. This makes things a bit easier.
It was always on the same network. It just doesn't connect with wifi (I have 5ghz wireless as well) which is a huge pain.

Then you'll have to check with Simon. Minimwatch should discover all MinimServer processes running on devices connected to the network, I understand. Can you see MinimServer in a control point like the Naim app or Bubble UPnP running on a mobile device connected to that network?
Yes. I can see and use minim on the naim app just fine. It's just a minimwatch issue.

Well you wrote that if you connect the laptop to the same switch to which the QNAP is connected, Minimwatch does indeed discover your MinimServer. This suggests a network issue rather than a Minimwatch issue.
A crucial test would be to install MinimServer on the laptop. If Minimwatch does not discover the MinimServer running on the laptop, you obviously have a Minimwatch misconfiguration.
I have not fiddled around with Minimwatch or MinimServer too much since both worked perfectly from the very beginning. But I have installed MinimServer on four devices and my experience is that one has to follow the instructions rigurously (e.g., on a raspberry Pi, install MinimServer as "pi" user) for the installation to work as advertised.
