172 to replace 122/sonos connect

Posted by: cooky on 21 May 2017

Currently haveing a full 5x plus sonos setup. Would the 172 be a worth while exchange for the 122/sonos.

The resale price from the 122/sonos would almost be the cost of a used 172. I like the idea of having to be able to use headphones and listen to hi-rez which i cannot do at the moment.

I think the 172 is a great performer that should be a big improvement on the Sonos as a source. It does require a well set up wired network, though, so be prepared to do whatever it takes to get your LAN sorted if necessary. What power amp will you be using? 172/200 is a great sounding combination.

Yes the 172 is really good. I had one for 3 years. Like others have said. A good NAS & CAT6A really helps.

I use a 64bit QNAP TS251+ with 8GB RAM and 2x1TB SSDs. The 172 responded nicely when I upgraded from an older 32bit QNAP 412.

The 172 is a pretty good package, everything works ok and the usability will be streets ahead of your current set up. I have had mine for three years too, got so used to the tablet controlling everything that it would be hard to go back. And sound with a NAP 200 is very nice. Yes you will need a wired LAN, but that's peanuts pricewise compared to the satisfaction.

Intrigued by the comment of Spacey regarding the Qnap upgrade. I have a 421, running 32 bit, two x 4TB drives. Got me thinking...

Defo worth updating the NAS Hardware. 64bit/8GB/SSD's are also blinding fast - it can index 1200 albums with full hi-res artwork in seconds.

Thanks for responding, i never thought about changing the 150x for a 200 i really like the idea of 172/200.

Netgear nas using cat6 along with virgin media 200 runs faultless.

172/200 is the system I've heard a couple of times  and been impressed by, but I'm sure it will be just fine with your 150 if that is a good match for your speakers. A nice used 200 would be the next obvious upgrade, though, if you feel the urge!
