Some Sarum questions

Posted by: Richard Choong on 24 May 2017

First, let me apologise before hand if this is a stupid question but if it is, please tell me!

OK. Question 1...the Sarum line of cables. In terms of levels (from lowest to highest) would this be correct:

Sarum Tuned Array

Sarum Super Tuned Array

Sarum T

Question 2...if I had a 5 din Sarum Tuned Array, can I upgrade it to a Sarum T? If so, what sort of price range are we talking about?

Thanks.

1) yes

2) Yes, around 1000 GBP for any Sarum cable to Sarum T

and oh it wasn't a silly question

I might add that, I would think,  the first two versions of Sarum will no longer be available having been supplanted by the T version

.... and there is always The Music

Unfortunately yes -

I have a 555 + 2x PS DR with Sarum Super.

and a nice and nicely set up Verdier TT into Superline + SC DR with Hi Line.

The 555 wins among my wife and friends.  This should not be so.

There is a point at which the cable discussion dominates the component discussion.  I think we are there at my house.

Ceteris paribus is expensive but important when you get to the Sarum level.

Skip have you replaced the DIN-XLR's with Superlumina ones yet?

I think once you do that, the turntable will win again. After trying quite a few cables, I would agree with many (and you can read on the thread last man standing by Jonas Olufsen) - the first cable to upgrade (strange as it sounds) is the DIN-XLR (to my ears)

I agree about cables, once you get to Sarum or SL levels, it does start to challenge component discussions.

I may be wrong but it looks like Sarum T DIN-XLRs are quite a bit cheaper than SLs. Given that Skip already has a Super Sarum, that might be the best place to look if considering a DIN-XLR upgrade.

ok I wasn't aware he already had the Sarum DIN-XLR

All I have is the DIN-DIN from CD555 to 552.   When you say DIN-XLR you mean from the individual power supply to the CD?  To the SuperLine?  To the PreAmp?  To the 500?   I was soul searching about a second Sarum from the Superline to the 552 just to get my sources even.

In my experimenting with different cables, other than standard Naim, I found that the IC from my phono to the 552 brought the greatest VFM. More so than the DIN/XLR's from my 500 or Snaic from 552 PS,although these replacements also brought dividends. If you like what the  Sarum brings to your 555, you should definitely try one from your Superline....

The same as what he said!

Hi Mark!

Hi Gregg ! Hope your knee is better?

I meant from the PSU of your 552 to your NAP 500.

Ok.  I had never thought of upgrading this DIN-XLR cable. I see now it would upgrade all the sources into the preamp.    Sorry to slow up the class.

Should I use the Sarum or the Super Lumina?

Posted on: 26 May 2017 by Richard Choong

I borrowed a pair of  used Din-XLR Sarum Tuned Array to test and I have to say I am impressed. Bigger sound. But it is a little bright and does have some bite to it. I think it needs time to settle but once it does, I think it would be great.

Them are fighting words I'm afraid ! Lot's of discussion in previous threads.... You are best to hear both in your own system before shelling out. Advocates of both cables seem to be very passionate about their choice .

Wow! New word:

Thanks.

Ceteris paribus

Not at this point, just making sure I understand the basics.

Suppose an Individual has chosen his end game pre amp. 552>252>282....

Not necessarily in this order:

A. Source>552~5Din-5Din

B. 552PS>500 ~4Din-XLR *

C. 3.5M-5.0M Speaker Cable

* 500 & 300 require two cables

The Full Loom?

What am I missing?

Is that Correct?

Anyone!

Yes indeed, however as you're already using a Sarum IC, you may well benefit from the synergy of Sarum DIN-XLRs. It seems that the consensus is that Sarum T moves things on a fair way and that, at a similar price to SL, you could even go as far as Music....

Posted on: 27 May 2017 by Chris Dolan

I'm not convinced by the super synergy argument - I have found the Chord Sarum Super to be superior to Super Lumina  in whatever configuration I have tried it so far.

So if the Sarum T is better still .....

Posted on: 27 May 2017 by Richard Choong

Would buying a pre owned Sarum Super Array or Tuned Array and upgrading it to Sarum T be more worthwhile (and VFM) than purchasing a new Sarum T?

I am referring to the Sarum IC (5 din).

maybe, depends where you are based, Keep in mind courier costs, VAT , duty etc.
