Editing meta data on compilation CDs found in the Core (downloads folder)

Posted by: Richard Choong on 28 May 2017

So I have a question about editing meta data on compilation CDs.

Some assumptions you can make....

1. The compilation CD is found in my "downloads" folder under "various artists".

2. That the compilation CD is  also found under  "various artists" folder in the "Artist" list on the Naim app accessing my Core

3.  That I have use a meta data editor (MP3Tag) to edit the information in the compilation CD to correctly reflect the name and artist of each song and this appears correctly on the Naim app when I access the compilation CD.

My question is this:

Why doesn't the song come up when I search under artist name? What's the solution? It seems odd that if under the compilation CD it shows the name and artist correct.

Any thoughts?

Richard, I have moved this over to the Streaming room for you.

Thanks. Sorry for the mixup.

I suspect that Naim is only searching the top level artist's name (various artists) for the album and it would be worth reporting this as a possible issue.

Naim developers won't necessarily pick it up from the forum here, so the best way to log it with them is to use the feedback option in the app (you can find it in the settings drop down menu).

best

Asset works in exactly the way you want, and as it should work. The issue must be down to the upnp software that the Core uses.

I am afraid only Naim can answer your question as the Core seems to rely on a proprietary UPnP server.

I would expect any decent UPnP server to allow one to control, up to a given extent, which indexes are actually presented to the users and how. From what has been reported in this forum, I am under the impression that the Core's UPnP server is very preliminary and offers extremely limited functionalities and customizability.

Perhaps you can try running MinimServer or Asset on a device connected to the same network as your Core and check if the problems that you are experiencing are due to poor indexing or to the limitations of the Core's UPnP server.

This is of course possible but would negate the very purpose of indexing which is to provide criteria for browsing and searching a collection of items which are orthogonal to (and independent of) folder and file names.

If one could meaningfully classify a collection of itenms (music files, photographs, documents, etc.) using only folder hierarchies, there would be no need for metadata!
