HDX issue

Posted by: crackie on 31 May 2017

I have a recent HDX issue. Overnight the display, front panel open/ close & power on/off stby. soft buttons are not lite up. However the Naim green logo on the front is on.

tried the main switch off/on twice no joy. N-serve app. on my IPad can't find the HDX.

I had the HDD replaced 2 years ago to a 2TB version after the original one failed. Worked a treat. From then until today. Only unusual use of the unit was the last 3 weeks it was played every day sometimes 24 h straight to run in speakers. No issues then, and we ripped 5 cds last night with the only issues it would not show the ripping monitor page until I went out and back in via the remote.

I think either the 2tb hdd has failed again, or something else.

any ideas ?

Has a re-start (ie controlled shutdown and power-up) helped? It may not necessarily be a main hard-drive as such but errors in a   Flash memory.

If it behaves the same, once you've restared it, then it's better it goes to a NAIM spa.

Try this: Switch off, remove the mains lead.  Unplug and then re-plug the Burndy plug.  Re-fit mains lead.  Switch on.

Can't do anything but turn off/on via the back main switch. Did that 6 or so times - no good.

Its now at my local Naim repairer agent. I'll report back when/if it can be fixed. Although when I describe the fault he suggested it may be a power supply issue.

I hope so as this may be less expensive then a hdd replacement. From past faults when a hdd goes a "please wait" fault starts first and it slowly degrades to a complete shut down. This one was almost instant, last night was working fine this morning a complete no go from my above description. And after a quick forum search, not any similar faults as mine are left listed as topics.

Hi Richard, thanks for the suggestion. But I am using the HDX as a "transport  " only, via a DC 1 cable to n-DAc and 555ps to the n-dac.

That's fine.  Still try the Burndy plug re-set.

If - in the end - it seems to be a hard drive failure, consider not to replace the HDD but to have it exchanged for an SSD drive ...

Looks like failure of the switched mode power supply which powers all the non-analogue circuitry.

Happened to mine. The part was under warranty so I just picked up the tab for the labour.

Will do Richard, if the tech. calls I'll advise the burndy re-plug check if he can't find the fault.

Yeah John, that's the advice from the tech. as well, power supply fault very likely. Hope the cost is not too savage......
