552s
Posted by: lyndon on 02 June 2017
Over the last couple of years ive seen loads of these being sold S/H, whether that's from shops, a well known auction site or other sites. Hopefully next year one of those will end up here.
My question is, are there loads of statements leaving Salisbury ?
I know one chap who appears here sold his and was looking at some high end Danish amps, my dealings with him concerned a DR s/cap
Just curious as to what all these people are moving to after having a 552

It appears to be fashionable for folks to ditch Naim and then announce the fact on a certain forum....usually in forceful and strident terms...and thus receiving praise and support from like minded folks....I think it's a bit of "willy waving" or perhaps they think it bestows a odd sort of "street credibility" upon them.
Fortunately I'm of an age where I don't feel the need to be fashionable - hence last weeks acquisition of an '82 (which I am thoroughly enjoying)
that's obviously why I didn't know
wouldn't be worth waving mine !

Any number of reasons really, upgrade to S1, change to something else, sometimes people folks downsize I imagine.
Eventually people want to try something else, it's only a matter of time. Lure of valves probably.
One of two things.
Hi if had become an obsession more than it should or they've overspent financially and need the money back. Maybe the wife has found the receipt.
People with a lifetime-budget of $100K for hi-fi are lucky; but it seems there are enough people with a $100K ANNUAL budget for swapping and playing to keep the makers cooking up cool products. Fun to watch for free from the sidelines, if you enjoy that kind of thing.
And, the whales make the lovely secondary market bottom-feeders like me enjoy. In fact, we help each other.
Bless 'em all.

I have read of threads you mention. It doesn't strike me as willy waving at all mearly people who to their ears have found a better sound and want to share with other people on that forum.
Out of interest I did a search for the product here and despite having its own thread a couple of years ago doesn't exist here on search.
I can understand that this forum isn't a platform for other companies products but it does strike me as healthy debate suffocated and the mentioned product must be seriously good.Bit disappointed why the product doesn't exist here.
Denaimification is a sinfull word here!
We like more naimification all the way with uber expensive power supplies that nobody else understands
try to expailn to somebody adding a 555ps to nds/272!!

I'd say quite a proportion of the 552s you saw for sale were upgrades to 552 DR.
it's a back-handed compliment to Naim that de-naimification is even a concept.
But there are obviously loads of other decent brands out there and I have moved on from Naim sources myself. Having put all my gear in storage for a house renovation it would make one seriously consider the amount of boxes and faff involved. Then I realise I'll have to go a long way before I better a 552>300. One has to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Apparently NAIM have sold enough Statement to at minimum, cover the cost of developing it.
Spin offs should further enhance the company.

Under-statement.

I believe it's not so much a case of being fashionable but of keeping up with developments. I love my 52/SC/135 system but, including my Radikal box, it runs to 5 black boxes. They do have a certain charm glowing away on their black SO rack but tbh I can see the attractions of having a single box that could provide similar SQ.
The Danish brand I that think is being referred to elsewhere in the thread makes an integrated amp that, based on the opinion of two dealers whose option I respect, puts up a very good performance close, if not exactly matching, the PRAT performance of a Naim system. I'm minded at some point to demo the product if I can get myself organised - the strength of Naim kit in the secondhand market makes a switch possible at little or no cost.
Rest assured, if I ever decide to make the change I will resist the temptation to appear on this, or any other form, waving my willy. Honest.
