Recess On Volume and Balance Knobs Of NAC 282 or NAC 252

Posted by: ryder. on 02 June 2017

The picture of the NAC 282 and NAC 252 on the Naim website shows a recess  around the lights of the volume and balance knobs. However, my NAC 282 does not show this recess as the lights are flush with the knobs. I would like to inquire if this recess is in existence on the 282 (or 252).

The photo taken on Naim's website:-

A close up image of the knobs which show the recess:-

Only the NAC 202 does not show this recess whereas the NAC 282, 252 and 552 show the recess (on Naim's website).

Probably whoever Naim buy their knobs from changed the design. Or Naim changed supplier. Very much doubt it'd qualify as an upgrade..

Ryder, are you trying to say you're not happy with the knob you have?

Only the 552 has these recesses and the knobs are machined from solid aluminium. All the other preamps (202, 282, 252) has the flush look that you described. Those knobs are made of plastic.

Thats one of the few ways to visually tell the difference from the 552 and the others. Very subtle, but there if you look hard enough.

Spacey, I do not have any issue with the recess. I just wanted to clarify whether the NAC 282 or 252 should show this recess as my unit does not show it whereas the image on Naim's website has it. It is a discrepancy.

As my NAC 282 is an early 2016 model which does not show this recess, I would like to know if Naim had made any changes to the latest models, whether the latest model shows this recess.

I have always been curious on the potential changes the Naim preamps may have had since they have been around for quite a while. I have asked this question before, whether there are any minor changes or revisions to the components such as transistors or capacitors etc. but Naim did not provide any details. Although the amplifier circuit remains the same, there might be minor differences in the type of components or wiring say between a 2002, 2009 and 2017 model. After all, the preamps (NAC 202, 282, 252 and 552) are about 15 years old now and there might some minor changes between the earlier and later units.

Just seeking clarification and nothing more.

Thanks for the response. If this information is correct, that would suggest that the image on Naim's website does not reflect the actual photo of the unit.

It's very simple. The pictures of the 282 and 252 on the website are actually of a 552. I told Naim this about two years ago.

Right, thanks for that. That clears the confusion. Interesting that you spotted this two years ago!

The 282 and the 252 on Naim's site don't have the 552's brushed top though. Perhaps there was a little post-production.

Whatever, the pictures are wrong.

Is Knobgate trending on Twitter yet?

nothing wrong with the plastic knobs, actually, the less weight on the Alps Blue pot the better.
