London Under Attack..
Posted by: Tony2011 on 03 June 2017
It seems there have been unconfirmed terror attacks.
Several reported incidents in relation to separate attacks in London streets.
Tony, the incident in Vauxhall was a stabbing but is unrelated to the incidents at Borough Market and on London Bridge.
A van was driven at speed across the bridge, mowing down pedestrians; some men got out and started stabbing people. They then ran across the bridge and onto Southwark Street/Borough Market where some more people were stabbed.
The Met has just confirmed that these latter two incidents were terror-related. As far as I know two of the perps were shot by the police.
Kev, this effing sucks. Let us all keep a vigil and hope most of the affected people are ok. Stay safe, mate.
I think seven may be dead - perhaps 50 injured. It seems that everyone involved in the attack is now either dead or in custody. From what I understand, the Met, British Transport Police and the emergency services have been amazing. Cops were on the scene within two minutes of the attack, ambulances within four.
Sad about the casualties, Kev. Great response from our emergency services. Wish they were not needed but good to Know they are responding to these days of uncertainty with immense efficiency.
Terrible news, my thoughts and prayers for those impacted by this senseless violence.
This is crazy. My thoughts and prayers for all who suffer as a consequence of these nonsense attacks.
Just terrible, my condolences to the inocent victims.
Not again, I hate that it starts becoming "normal".....
Firstly of course my love goes out to those directly affected by last nights attacks. I dont usually like commenting on theses events but now far from becoming normal they are evoking an emotional response and a fear that even though I realise is the whole point of terror acts I cannot help feeling. It is all very well to say that we should not be cowed by these attacks and that we should go about our normal lives without fear when you have people that you love and whose safety YOU are responsible for. It is only by feeling a healthy amount of hear that we can be vigilant but we must remember not to give in to hate and to those who would have us give into the very natural feelings of hate that we feel at these times. Remember what it was that lead us here, the past is indeed another country let us make sure that they do, do things differently there.
My sincere condolencies to the victims & those affected by this.
Im sure few people here have been affected by terrorism, Ive had two near misses one of which was the transatlantic plot in 2006, but that dosnt stop me flying & probably more chance being run over by a bus.
However, whats desparately needed is effective imigration control along with swift deportation procedures for those who fall short of the requirements what ever that should be.
The authorities also need the power to be more pro-active in dealing with known suspects along with the resources to do so. What ever they are doing now simply isnt enough.
N
I want to say thanks to the moderator for removing a reaction not suited. The discussion how we can solve this attacks is a very difficult one. But governments in Europe schould be more proactive in dealing with this. We can not accept this to become a part of our lives. When i see the photos of yesterday attack i get very sad of what state our democracy is in. My sincere condolencies to the victims and those affected by this.
Again, one has to take one's hat off to the police - within eight minutes of the attack the three suspects were all "neutralised", to use the jargon.
If they hadn't responded so quickly, the carnage could have been much worse.

I'm slightly reluctant to post this ... in essence I agree with you, but what is done in tackling extremism, including deportations if needed, must be done within the rule of law. It also needs to be practical and be targeted.
Any additional powers also need to be practical and proportionate. The predictable response to this by the Home Secretary has been to repeat the call for banning end-to-end encryption. A plan which would do more to disrupt legitimate commerce and communications and would just force "extremists" underground further using secondary forms of communications on the (so called) dark web.

In complete agreement.
My thoughts are with those affected by this and all terrorist actions both in the UK and WorldWide,
Just watched Theresa May’s speech outside No.10
If that wasn’t blatant electioneering I don’t know what is.
An absolute disgrace.

Absolutely. The only way to protect innocent foreign people from these British thugs is to prevent them coming to the UK.

'enough is enough' says woman who was Home Secretary for six years.
Oh come on Fatcat get real, I really don't understand where you are coming from. She's the PM, a speech on last night events was mandatory, if she had not made a speech or if she'd made a soft downbeat speech she would have been slaughtered by JC & Co, & if thats not electioneering, what is. And if you are saying the speech content was electioneering, no way is that electioneering, at last - at long last - I heard a TM speech with some real passion & determination.

A damned good job they have not yet been stopped from shooting to kill. If this happened in a local town and not a major city the damage would be immense because there is no way armed police would get to a similar incident in sufficient numbers where I live.

There was an ex policeman on sky news, he said the only mention of the police in the Tory manifesto, concerned there curtailment of their powers to stop and search. Presumably they stopped and searched the guy with a couple of knives near No.10 a couple of months ago.
You couldn’t make it up.

Personally ... and I know you will accuse me of left wing bias ... her speech got political when she started to talk about what must be done / what she was going to do to try to prevent further actions. She is currently the PM yes, but she is not an MP and therefore not in a position to speak to future laws.
Anything she wants to say about what a future Conservative government lead by her as PM should be said separately in a party political press conference, separate from her response as the current PM.
Politics are best kept off this thread IMO. Lets just say I've said what I believe & that she got her speech content about right.
Mike, this thread is political, whether you like it or not. We in the West are under attack from fascists wedded to a far-right dark age religio-political ideology.
Another day, another horrible attack. My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and to all who now feel just a bit more worried about being out in public.
Additional surveillance requiring large increases in police manpower. Banning encryption and monitoring internet connections. Stop and search policies based on racial profiling. It is a slippery slope heading towards "preventative" arrests and possibly mass internment (with no real evidence of a crime). Is that the world we want to live in?
We all understand that life in a civilized society involves tradeoffs between security and freedom, but where to draw the line? Should we go to the extreme, and require some (or perhaps all) to wear a location monitoring device? I don't know how else to 100% prevent citizens traveling covertly to Syria or Libya, and then returning home as more dangerous threats.
IMO, the very worst time to make these difficult decisions is immediately after a horrible terrorist attack. Radical changes that seriously impact our freedom need to be debated and legislated. Citizens need a voice in the very difficult decisions that need to be made. But I do think, unfortunately, this is where we are heading.
