London Under Attack..

It seems there have been unconfirmed terror attacks.
Several reported incidents in relation to separate attacks in London streets.
Eloise - you make some good points. I'm no techie so won't presume to understand what's doable and what's not. Perhaps I've got a bit more confidence in government bodies in them keeping within the strictures of the law, and there's also the role of the judiciary which might be given a role so as to ensure good checks and balances. If there were more oversight of the mainstream platforms and media which results in the terrorists & extremists gravitating towards the dark-web I would have thought that was a good thing because at the moment they benefit from being a (relatively) small number of needles among several very big haystacks. If the haystacks were fewer and much smaller I should imagine the bad guys would find the challenge of remaining hidden rather more difficult than they do today.
Not sure I agree your last point. CCTV shows what I'm doing, who I'm with and where. The internet would reveal what I'm looking at, what I'm saying and who to. I'm not convinced it reveals what I'm thinking

This is a bit more a political debate than perhaps is suitable for this thread, but I'm not sure the record shows that we should trust in the governement and government bodies keeping within the structure of the laws. The recent Investigatory Powers Act specifically allowed Home Secretary to bypass judicial oversight (if I understand correctly) and keep the judiciary out of the loop.

What's easier to find ... a steel needle in a haystack or a specific steel needle in a pile of steel needles. Okay that's perhaps a bad metaphor.
The question is, (and another bad metaphor perhaps) is it easier to find the specific information you're looking for in the British Library open to the public; or is it easier to find that information in a smaller but private collection?

I'm not going to debate your point of view ... but it seams to me we are getting closer and closer to the "thought police", when the real risks will be hidden even deeper.
PS. Some of my assessments of what is possible is from third party and my interpretations ... I may have enough knowledge to be dangerous.
Today have to add thoughts of the police officer in Paris and their family and all caught up in another senseless attack!
And (controversially I'm sure) I am going to add my thoughts for those killed in Tehran today.
