Catalyst 2960 config

Spent some time configuring the cisco switch - after some trial and error found this information that I was looking for:

This is useful in case you need to run a cable from the cisco switch into a netgear switch:

From http://www.dummies.com/program...n-using-web-console/

Smartport RoleDescription
DesktopSuitable for access devices, such as desktop computers and
printers. Implementation increases security on your network ports.
This role is not suitable for routers and switches.
Cisco SwitchConfigures the port in Trunk mode with the other connected
device that is expected to be a switch.
Cisco RouterConfigures settings that are compatible with a network
router.
Cisco Phone + DesktopCompatible with Cisco IP phones. Because phones have built-in
switches to support a desktop connection and the IP phones
typically operate on different VLANs and have QoS configured, these
ports have special configuration requirements.
Cisco Access PointIf you are using Cisco IOS 12.2 or later, this role can be used
for access points that you may have on your network.
NoneRemoves all custom settings from the port.

I've got several configured for desktop - these are connected to the naim streamer etc. and a few as access point - these are connected to a further switch.

is it necessary to configure the cisco switch ?  i received it one week ago and connected to it my netgear/tp ps to it , from where go lan cables to nds and serve. I found, with my ears and on my system, that this combo sounds best. If it was possible to put a linear ps to the cisco, i would use only the cisco....The cisco alone is noisier....

My cisco was factory reset and i understood that i have nothing to do, just put it away from the router and on a rigid platform or better legs.  Have i to look after some configuration ?

I am considering buying a 2960 to replace my ageing Netgear GS105. I have a spare 12V 2A linear power which I would like to use with the 2960. Would MM or Keler please advise me the V and A specification of the 2960?

The 2960 I have comes with an inbuilt power suppy. It is not possible to bypass it.

[@mention:1566878603973271] - I did the rest myself. Once I did that - I had to configure it so it is inline with what I need. If it's working well for you, leave it alone.

Correct, if the switch is factory reset, there is no configuration necessary. You can however configure it to operate your home network with multicast discovery more effectively (such as UPnP), and you can configure it to optimise network management traffic to better suite what is attached to the port... as well as many many other things... but you don't NEED to do any of it.

The powersupply requirements of the one 2960 model than be be powered by an external DC supply is 48 volts at around 500mA, or via PoE.

The remaining models have internal mains powersupplies.

Thanks MM and Simon! I will use the spare LPS for my other switch then.

it is not possible to power the cisco2960 with linear ps. The cisco uses 48v stmps....
