Extending the nap 500 signal xlr cable

Posted by: Salvo on 04 June 2017

Hi,

I need to extend my 500 signal xlr cable conneting the amp to the NAC 552PS. Extending the cable by 50cm to 1.5 meter would work ok.

Has anyone tried this? Any suggestion on cable quality? Could Naim supply the extended lenght cables?

lots of questins :-)

Thanks for your replies

Naim will try to persuade you against it, but IIRC they have in the past made up DIN-XLR cables a little longer to accommodate customers needs.  1.5m should be fine so worth asking your dealer to try twisting Naim's arm...

Chord does custom lenght cables for NAIM.

The standard supplied length is too short when you're using a 500 - going round the heatsink robs you of several inches. I made up my own, which meant I could position my SNAXO in a better position & they sound nicer than the originals anyway.

Thanks for your replyes. i think I have found the alternative cable through Flashback sales. I will be getting the 1.2mt.

Before going with flashback, have a look at Witch Hat Audio. I used their Hatpin din to XLR and it was better than the Naim standard lead. I expect they would do a longer pair for you.

I'd be stopping to take stock with your 500 system Salvo !

At your performance level the last thing you want to do is spoil the ship for a hap'worth of tar.

Not that I'm saying Flashback cables are inferior, just that there may be other options that are superior.

I'd be doing my best to have a listen to some of the cables that are available even though it may mean faffin' around with the location of your kit to accomodate standard length demo cables that you can lay your hands on.  That's what I did  (and I didn't end up with Flashback on my 500).

it's all a matter of money

Chord Sarum T is 2100 GBP per NAP 300 or 500 DIn/XLR

SL is  GBP 1629 for NAP 250 DIn/XLR, I assume this is twice for NAP300/500 hence GBP 3258/-

I use 2m Chord Chorus Reference for my pre to power amp (din to XLR) cables. That is one advantage of other suppliers - variable lengths!

well how does it sound...? this is a bit like 252 vs 282, plenty of supporters for either chord or SL.

Well, thank you for all your suggestions. I have ordered the 1.2mt from Flashback as it will give me an extreme idea of comparison between the standard and the "others".

Being chep enough I will be able to work my way up the ladder with "better" products; eventually.

It will also help me "discover" how my earing is going (at 57) in tracing the subtle changes that "these things" bring.

Will keep you posted.
