S.Lumina Interconect VS. Hi. Line
Posted by: rsch on 09 June 2017
Two days ago i installed a new S. Lumina (555- 552) considering all the praise it received since its launch, i feel pretty underwhelmed. I' m well aware of the run in issue but.
Direct comparison with the old one showed more organic and refined presentation but it also seems more laid back especially in the mid/ mid/high.
Definetely switching back to Hi Line it seems there is a better PRAT more forward and " Out of the box voices", more "Live presentation" and less hi fi, altough Hi line has more rough edges, it is more fun to me.
Also a little issue is that being a little longer, it touches the floor, so i had to placea foam block under it.
For the moment it looks more a side step than game changer. Like comparision, the recent introduction of a second 555DR psu payed much more dividends

Thank you Roberto for your feedback,
I'm evaluating to switch from the Hi-Line DIN-DIN to the Tellurium Q Black Diamond DIN-DIN but I do not want to lose the PRAT and the "live " presentation of Hi-Line. It seems that the SL produce this effect, perhaps a good burn-in sort out everything.
strange... hope it runs in.
Naim told me SL needs 100 to 200 hours of running in.... let us know if you are happier with the cable...
It will change, and you'll love it. Because Naim is not only able to make you buy expensive things, but also to make you love them. Naim is a wife. Be trustful and wait.
I found in my system the upgrade from a Hi Line to a S/L was a massive step up particularly when using S/L speaker cables.
Mind you it does take a far old while to perform at its best trust it works out for you.

Hi, Crompton Divided, is that called Thought Insertion BTW. Welcome to Naim Forums, and good luck with your re-conjunction.
When I switched from the Hi-Line to the S/L it was a very big upgrade even with NACA 5 speaker cables.
The S/L must not touch any other cables. Difficult to see clearly from the picture but it does look as if it could be touching other cables. Makes a big difference for the S/L and the high line.
Good luck with the burn in.

Hi, from the pic. it looks but actually doesn't touch other cables.
I really hope it will open out, i'm tempted to keep the Hi Line as well.

Thanks, but I think that Thought insertion had more to do with Philip K. Dick than with the author of the novel I was referring to. I am grateful for your wishes, though. Or should I say we are.
I'm sure it will. Mine certainly did and promted me to go for a full loom in the end. It's also more robust than the Hi-Line. I was always careful with mine but I still had one fall apart on me. It was soon back after a free fix from Naim but still a pain when it happened.
I really hope so, this last i left DCD Anastasis live on repeat to accelerate the run in.
Hi Line breakage also occured to me.

P.s. i also noticed you own Sopra 2, are you happy with them ? which loudspeaker did you own before ?

No my experience was the same, used it and used it for months and swapping back to a hi.line was heaps better. More natural, organic, less hifi, less thin and cold sounding.
System - active DBL's

Hi,
Do you mean Hi Line is nore organic and less hi fi ?
I found S. Lumina more refined and organic but at the expense of engagement.

I know this might sound a bit silly Rsch, but you could also maybe try looping the S/L loosely into a coil to avoid it hanging down and touching the ground (ie. the polystyrene foam).
Its not ideal, but I had the same issue as I only have 3 boxes and a low rack. I tried it with and without and preferred it looped up. It may just be placebo why I think preferred it of course, but I haven't touched it since.
I did / do find the S/L cables very sensitive to what they touch (I have the speaker cables too). And it did also take a while before I was hearing it at its best.......
Hope this might help.
May be , hower it's pretty annoying that after we spent thousand for a new cable having to trim it and be more subject with an even more obsessive layout an never be sure which is the best

I mean that the hi.line sounds tonally correct where the SL sounded detailed but thin. Yes, absolutely more involvement with hi.line. SL was more like HIFI and Hi.line was more about music and prat.

I do indeed. Only a few weeks old so still running in. I used to have Ovator 600s which I liked but prefer the midrange qualities of the Focals; bass is also more controlled. Contrary to some posts on the forum I actually think the Focal tweeters suit my system better than the Ovators, so perhaps it comes down at least in part to rooms again. My listening room is 38ft by 24ft - or whatever that is in metres.
My dealer also took a while setting them up for me. I wasn't originally going for black but they certainly work well in my room and don't dominate like the Ovators did. I did look at the walnut finish but felt this didn't work with the design of the speaker. Red or Orange would have resulted in divorce
Thank you for the comment, you have a pretty large room, pretty much every speaker is working better especially when distant from side bounderies boundaries. I have a little system with nSat placed on 10+ m lonf wall and sound much better than previous smaller room.

Thank you, it reflects pretty much my first impression

I wonder if the SL cables are going through the SNAIC shaker machine in Salisbury like the standard interconnects
SL = SNAIC Luxe

That's what I love about the Forum, my vocabulary has increased 10 Fold! Luxe!

Perhaps the only Reptile that can adapt to the Naim's ecosystem, is the King Snaic.
That being said, the Reptiles that belong to the SL Family, can only perform at it's best in a familiar environment.
That being the Full Loom!

And that was also my first impression. But now I use it as vastly preferable to the HiLine, so what happened?
Well two things:
1. - it needs to run-in a few days to get over a bright-glare mine initially had and begin to fill-out the lower-frequencies.
2. - it definitely must not touch the floor. It it does it will sound hard and 'detailed' in a wrong analytic way and lose all fun.
Now I did not know this for a while and the cable I had received many curses until I discovered what was wrong and that Naim did not release a dud expensive cable that sounded worse that their less-expensive one in my all-Naim system.
One trick I used to get the cable off the floor - and foam and bubble-wrap don't work - is to put a very light loop in the cable, but threading it through itself in an open knot - do not have it tight - so that it hangs free. All the fun and get-up and go then appears and you see what it is all about.
Also over a longer run-in of weeks and months the cable fills-out the lower frequencies and loses any thinness effect, although this is really only a problem when it touches the floor.
I switched back to the HiLine initially a few times while discovering all this and eventually the SL cable blew it away in terms of open dynamics, naturalness, detail and life - like a live event compared to the (by comparison only) more closed-in but still nice HiLine.
You may decide different, but try it off the floor.
DB.
I agree that keeping SL I/C off the floor and free from touching other cables is critical to getting the right performance.
I tried to rationalize how and why but in the end that is the way it is.
