Upgrading steps
Posted by: Andres Herrera on 13 June 2017
I have been enjoying my system very much and have been making small steps upgrading. I was wondering what people think of what I am thinking.
Current setup
SN2, Focal Aria 936, NACa5, CD5si, Nd5sx, rega rp3, stage line.
I use all different sources pretty evenly. Was thinking adding a Hugo 2qute, or changing the Nd5sx for an NDX. And another option was changing the CD5si for a used Cdx2.
Though I wish I could make huge steps at a time I can't afford them.
Though I enjoy my system I would like a little more jazz club live performance sound. I don't know how to describe it otherwise. I mainly listen to Jazz, Classical, 80's, and Latin.
Thanks for your comments

Cd classical and rock, electronic, box sets
Vinly 60s 70s blues ,jazz ,all blue note, beatles
Streaming new stuff via tidal, all above when i am lazy, 80/90 party hits
Also add japanese cds for blue notes -they are far better than 24/192 -
But i am a guy who read a book on kindle and then buy the hardcover version ıf i like it very much
Each one of them is a thorphy to show how smart and sophisticated am i! Maybe that is the reason of my attchement but i think they all sound little different
Used cd2x / hugo2 for streamer / rega 8 will be my thereesome
why not, you can add also fm tuner and reel to reel tapes and nakamichi 1000 tape deck....all having distinctive inner sound. And when friends come, they will say" ouah! all that stuff..." and you will be pleased to invite them...
Relax Emre, i am just a little ironic sometimes. If i had limitless founds, i would add a cd555/ 2 555dr to my nds and sme turntable. But i prefer, with my limited founds, with the help of bank credit, to maximize my 2 sources.
Reel to reel sounds very nice but albums are very expensive
Rome is not build in a day, it is a long way till retierement, priorities or favorites kick in, you can very good 3 source with the price of cd555/555s, no need to maximize anything, there will be always a new max!
I am very relax by the way... and no friend of mine gives a crap about my sources, they all told me that new apple speaker will blow all my hifi gadgets to trash...
when i look at your profile, it looks like you want to have a museum of gear: lots of different sources and many many boxes. But if it is your trip, why not, i respect that.
My dream would be more to have only a super integrated amp/dac/phono/nas and a turntable. The jeff rowland daemon integrated , with dac/streamer / phono inside, for 40k, looks very tempting. No more wondering of different upgrades like the naim path, with xps, 555 dr, supercaps, or better amp or preamp : just a wonderful integrated amp, a very good turntable and speakers : only 3 components.
D'agostino momentum integrated, with phono and streaming dac inside, for 44 k pounds, looks marvelous too, all in one box.
Keler you started sound like my wife!! ![]()
i give my reasonings for all streaming, cd and turntable..... i like my small museum of gear and willing to expend it in time.
naim is not a simple setup but i like it, if you don't like black boxes and power supplies etc. you are in the wrong brand forum....
i can also live with a absolare integrated , phono stage and kronos sparta and a bluetooth speaker boom for tidal... not too many boxes but very good kit, that is a good choice as well.... i heard them playing, very but very good...

enjoy what you have, you have wonderful system. I love naim sound but not all these boxes...And i don't know if i would enjoy the big integrated i mentioned. Just an idea, to talk...
For now i am very satisfied of what i have.
Get an external DAC for your ND5XS. You retain the usability of the ND5XS and improve the sound.
If you like the Naim sound look for a Naim DAC used. Chord is a viable option. Another option I would present would be a Schiit Audio Yggdrasil. You can connect Coax digital to it and it is widely well regarded. Should cost new what a Hugo does. Biggest problem with it is that it is silver not black. I have it's lesser model Gungnir Multibitand use my UnitiQute to feed it via COAX.
I reread your want for a Jazz Club feel. I don't think CDX2 gets you there. When I heard it the CDX2 was rock concert.
My Gungnir Multibit does Jazz club really well.

Then he shouldn't be a dealer - NAIM doesn't permit "mail order"/"web" dealings!

I have the same problem with my local dealer. This is why I'll never buy a "high end" Naim component or power supply. Mail order should be allowed when the local guy doesn't want to invest.

yes, but unfortunately a lot of dealers are like that... as for my experience in Paris....but not all.

Yes, same here in Ontario. Dealers stock what they can reasonably expect to sell. I doubt you will find any of them with a 500 series piece to demo off the shop floor...
Mıne have statement and supernaim, nothing in between... lots of streamers tough
Consolidate the digital side - sell the cd player and buy a hugo dac or trade-in the nd5 for an ndx. I listened to the nd5 and ndx (without power supplies) and felt the ndx a justifiable step-up in performance for the extra cost.
Buy a 2Qute for ND5XS the Rega rp3 is fine for occasional listening a cartridge upgrade would be a more economical way of improving sound and perhaps a FlatCap XS which I believe can power both your CD and your Stageline.
