Cutting wires when taking line boards out of nac82 to replace with na523/3

Posted by: ndx202- on 15 June 2017

Getting a muddy and shut in sound from the above NA523/3 MM Boards.. Have been advised by Tom Tom that there are two wires to cut one on each channel of the main board...This they say will restore the sound to its glory..I have never heard of this ..??

Could someone advise with a diagram as i will sort this out myself .. I am a fully trained panel engineer and have the skills necessary..

Thanks

NDX, first off please could you just stick to your original thread rather than keep starting new ones on the same subject.

Second, can you confirm exactly which boards you have - you initially stated they were NA522/3 (MM boards), now you say they are NA523/3 (MC boards). NA523/3 boards are not compatible with a Linn K9 cartridge - you will get awful sound.

As to the question of links, you shouldn't need to cut anything on the NAC82.  It came with link boards fitted which could then be easily exchanged for alternatives such as phono boards, should they be required.

OK, some possibilities are; dirty stylus, worn stylus, incorrectly fitted cartridge (geometry or wiring), poor connectors (are you using BNC adaptors?), faulty phono boards or boards in need of a service.  Also check the arm/cartridge tracking force as well as VTA.  If the arm is too far tail down then this can account for muddy replay.

Will send some photos.

Ive tried a project phono stage on the line cards na526/1 and the sound is fine

Then it sounds like either the NA522 boards are in need of attention or service, or, assuming you are using RCA to BNC adaptors then these have had it and need to be replaced.

Richard, I must agree used a LP12 into a 82 with a couple of different cartridges over the years provided you have the right boards correctly fitted and in fine fettle they work well. When I had the correct termination fitted to replace the BNC  adaptors that was a major improvement.

NDX202, How do you connect into the phono BNC inputs on the NAC82?

Thanks.  The gold RCA phonos are non-standard.

The boards are NA522/4, so that's good.  Apart from that it's difficult to diagnose the problem further from afar without taking a listen or testing the boards out.  Naim phono boards are on the dark and earthy side, rather than the light and bright side, so do bear that in mind.

Been in contact with Phil at Naim is looking in to it Richard. Have sent photos to them as image shack struggling with this site .. By the way Tom Toms advice was sketchy at best... Hope to get some kind of resolve soon..

All the best

sending the phono boards back.. Putting the line boards back and buying a separate Naim Phono stage..Thanks for everything

Having the current phono boards serviced would be a cheaper solution than purchasing a Stageline with the SQ being pretty much the same in the end. Just a thought...

I'm with Mark on this one. I used to use LP12 with K-9 into NA522 phono boards in a NAC82/Supercap with a NAP180 into SBLs, which gave a thoroughly enjoyable  musical reproduction. I'd get the boards serviced if I were you.
