Atom, Star and Nova - Ripping and Serving

[@mention:1566878603985147] Coming back to my questions posted when Naim announed the new Uniti line:
https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...06#64640389019535106
(1) Is Star able to rip to a network share?
(2) Are Atom, Star and Nova able to serve from a network share?
Thank you
[@mention:1566878603985147], I now found the video by Digital Audio Review with Naim's Steve Sells mentioning that there will be a future upgrade for the Atom to provide ripping and serving capabilities (via external CD-ROM drive plugged into the front USB port ripping to a USB drive connected to the back USB port). I don't know if I am allowed to post links to an external website - so I won't. So has this idea been scrapped or postponed? I am confused...

Hi,
All I can say is that ripping functionality is not on the information sheet that I have here and the Atom I have at home does not rip and shipping Atoms and Novas will not be able to rip.
Best
Phil
Just looked at the video of Steve Sells and he definitely said a software update would provide a ripping capability for Atom.

Hi,
Once again - shipping Atoms and Novas will not be able to rip.

Phil, this is understood - my question is will there be a future upgrade as mentioned by Steve Sells (he did talk about a future upgrade, not about shipping capabilities).

It's not in any of the information I have that this is something that will be supported in the future...

Hopefully this is not the case! The ripping technology of the Core is not something that is worth porting to other devices, it seems to me.
I don't think there's much to port since the Star has that capability and probably shares a good part of its architecture with the Atom. As Steve Sells said that this functionality would be available at a later date via software upgrade I am sure not following that roadmap was/is a question of product marketing rather than avoiding a programming effort (and other few things left and right).

Even if there was nothing to port: the "ripping technology" of the Core is obsolete and certainly not worth being adopted by other devices. In my view, of course.
NBPF - now I understand what you mean...

i recommend to you the melco n1a/2 review on hifi news( on the melco site). It seems to be more appropriate to editing classical music, by composers, artists, ...probably better than the core ..review by Andrew Everardt, member of this forum too.

Thanks Pierre but the Melco does not appear to offer a BNC spdif output. The only reason for replacing my current source would be to reduce the number of boxes, ideally from 4 to 1. The Melco would still require a USB->SPDIF bridge and its power supply, I am afraid. This would mean 3 boxes instead of 4. Also, I am not sure the Melco comes with a wireless card. This is a mandatory requirement for my system as I do not want to have to connect my server + renderer to my LAN via cables. Best, nbpf
lot of anxiety about this ripping issue. Relax forum members - I use commercial ripping software, DBpoweramp anyway, and it works fine for lots of people...
DomTom, this was discussed on the other thread. The ability to rip was doubtless discussed and considered near the unveiling of the new Atom (I'm told that the platform has the capability and that's confirmed by engineer Steve Sells) and appears that it was also even included as a 'feature' on an early PR. However the decision was quickly made not to include this feature (although I believe it could possibly be added in future should it be deemed desirable and the firmware etc.. modified to suit). Any manufacturer reserves the right to change a specification or features prior to units reaching production readiness and this feature, while a possibility, was not included quite early on, for whatever reason. This was many months before units eventually went into production and indeed it is also confirmed as such by Phil when asked about this in this very thread back in June (see above).
No hoax here.

Hi Richard, it was the wrong use of the word. I've deleted my post as it's not exactly what I meant.
