Enjoying ndac

Posted by: Matthew Johns on 21 June 2017

picked up a pre loved mid 2014 ndac for cracking price in mint condition

got it hooked up to my ndx an xps dr and must say me liking very much, more detail and more attack are my immediate listening observations

only issue is got it sat on top of my ndx on top floating shelf of my svt quadraspire rack as ran out on shelf space, guess time to order a couple of extra shelves

You'd better order two - the nDac really sings with a large'n'nasty 555PS hooked up to it

Probably a good idea to move the XPSDR over from the NDX to the NDac first and then look to trade the XPS for a 555Dr.

Just don't use it with the Naim dc1 bnc cable.  Like turning a race horse into a meaty burger. Nice but just so wrong.

Use the dc1 and adding a power supply is like adding bacon and cheese.

Use it with a more worthy cable and cut down on cholesterol causing heart attack.

I agree, the dc1 is like a prawn and avocado sandwich!

I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Have got my XPS DR feeding the NDAC, ordered a Chord BNC-BNC to match others

be a while before can afford a 555PS, is it that much of a lift know people speak very highly of it?

thanks

Yes - it is. I particularly like my nDAC with a non-DR version of the 555PS. Those can be found at very reasonble prices from well known dealers.

Adam, the NDAC with non DR version of 555PS was a favourite of mine for severeal years, enjoy

Nice to hear, Matthew. The combo should be much better with psu on ndac, as Sjbabby states. This has been written extensively about earlier on the forum, I can recomend a search.

Hi Toby,

I think I understand that you regard the dc1 as slightly fat, but in less foody metaphors, what do you think is wrong with dc1? What are you using instead?

Nothing wrong with that cable.  I remember when the ndac was released many reviews and critics said it could be the Naim product that other muggles could use outside of having to run a full Naim system...   .   LAMP

Ok, Would be interesting with other options AS well.

Fred - A properly terminated 75 Ohm cable should be all you need. Mark Grant cables do the job very effectively and for little money.

Congratulations, nDAC is a keeper!

Now your first move should be to switch XPS DR from NDX to nDAC. NDX now works only as transport and nDAC has much bigger responsibiltiy of the sound coming out of your speakers. Also, there's better alternatives than DC1, like people wrote earlier. I recently switched from DC1 to a £25 Belden 1694A BNC-BNC cable made by BlueJeansCable. Much better balanced and more open sound.

I am too very happy with the ndac added to ndx. If only I could have the 555ps.

Which Chord BNC did you order

Hopefully one of the ARAY cables?

hi analog music,

already got super sarum array in system, so thought to hell with it and got a BNC - BNC sarum T cable (dealer very good to me on price) - not got it though yet using a BNC - RCA atlas integra cable had spare for the minute as all i had

hadn't thought of 555PS straight off to be honest price scared me, but its another upgrade for the list (you know that list that never quite seems to get shorter................)

I have a non-DR 555PS powering the NDX, would adding the N-DAC make a big difference?

Neil

No contest, for a small outlay in my opinion massively.

A superb source.

Hi Neil,

still got a pretty poor bnc -rca cable hooked up and not yet had chance to do extensive testing or received my new chord cable yet

but did notice a different sound immediately compared to the ndx/xps dr combo, must say after short listen preferred the sound of the ndac/xps dr combo, would describe it as a more detailed punchy sound with more attack

can't comment on the 555ps though, is another one for my never ending upgrade list

will report back when had more time to bed in

Congratulations Matthew! One of the best upgrades I ever made. I am assuming your nDAC has been updated to v.4.11.8 for a more fluid and airy, however slightly less forward presentation and PRaT. FWIW I would always recommend to stay with a DC1 in an all Naim system like yours. :D
