Bass return

After considering forum and dealer advice and my own experiences over the past 6 months with equipments demo's I have decided to sort my amplification / electronics first before speakers. I now have a 272 /250dr on home demo as the positive posts are hard to ignore. First of all this combo has resolved bass boom in my room, even on previously difficult tracks at high volume. This really demonstrates how better amplification controls speaker drivers.  It is a very musical pairing with great resolution. I don't think the sound stage is quite as good as my system with the ndac in situ but all other areas are improved. It hasn't been powered up for more than 12 hours so I guess there will further slight improvements.

High frequencies remain too harsh for my liking so I guess I will ultimately need to change speakers. Last home demo of motive sx2 were promising and could be the solution. Maybe some TQB speaker cable?

My next home demo will be to add 282/200dr to my current front end and compare results.

I think I am slowly getting somewhere. Thanks for all the advice.

While I agree that better amplification brings better bottom-end control, my experience with Naim gear is that moving higher on the chain won't necessarily mitigate high frequency issues in the room. If you haven't already done so I'd strongly consider some form of room treatment to ameliorate the high frequency harshness. Needn't be expensive and with some degree of homework and experimentation you might find you can sit pat with your current gear by simply adding a few absorptive panels or some soft furnishings to your room.

Looks like we are back to the same post / topic again.....

Stuart - being a musician,  you should understand the room acoustics better than anyone else

Don't underestimate the role of the preamp in bass control (amongst other things.) I used to think my bass problems were mostly room related, but adding a 282 pretty much sorted it.

Adam I understand the importance of room acoustics but I'm not sure I fully understand the physics - that's the problem From what I have read solving bass problems is the most difficult process requiring extensive and expensive panelling. Get it wrong and it can make no difference or even make things worse. I'm not one to dabble in something I don't fully understand. This is why I have looked at amplification and this seems to have solved the problem, maybe similar to ChrisSU's experience.

Joerand diffusers and or absorbers will definitely be  worth a go.

At the moment it is sounding pretty damn good. I can see what all the fuss is about.

It would however be good to treat myself to some new speakers while I'm at it ;-)!!
