Recording from vinyl

Hi,

I'm looking into ways of transferring some of my vinyl collection into digital so I can load it onto a personal player and also maybe to archive, though this is a secondary consideration.

I recently discovered a shoe-box sized Denon CD Recorder in the loft I'd forgotten I had. It's a very basic unit with record levels and very little else. Virtually a cassette deck but recording onto CD rather than tape. It's from around 2002 ish so i guess there are far better options around now. I've thought of recording onto a hard drive but don't know where to start.

Ideally I just want to connect it to the main rig as you would a cassette recorder. Anyone got any recommendations of either a good recording unit or an alternative?

Thanks in anticipation of your helpful replies.

Regards,

Well the kit has arrived. So easy to set up and record, just like a tape deck only better results. Can't remember the last time I recorded vinyl!

Just need to work out how to split the files into tracks and add metadata now. Any guidance, in non technical terminology would be greatly appreciated.

Steve, Audacity is an easy (and free) way to cut out the individual tracks.

Right I've downloaded Audacity and using that cut a file up into segments, renaming the tracks and adding some info then imported it to iTunes and added a picture of the album sleeve manually.

Am I right in thinking a programme like dBpoweramp acts as a "metadata library" and all I need to do is look up an album title and it magically does the rest, like Gracenote in my Sony MediaGo ripper does, or is it more involved? I've downloaded the trial version  of dBpoweramp but will need to record something before I can have a play around with it later this evening.

Sorry for being a nuisance but a weakness in computer type stuff is the reason I stay away from streaming!

Has anyone tried a Rega A2D? I have an old Pioneer PDR609 CD Writer, which makes good recordings on to a standard CD, but the resolution just isn't there?
