Speaker Placement Question and Ideas....

Posted by: Arnsider on 27 June 2017

Has anyone had any success, and is it even a good idea, placing their speakers either side of the TV across a room corner? I ask as my room, although reasonable in size (26ft x 14ft), is somewhat limited in placement and I was considering an experiment.

If I explain, there are only two realistic options of placement in my room. The first is either side of a mid positioned fireplace along the long room wall similar to HH's original system pic... This has the advantage that the speakers are open, about 8 inches from the back wall and spaced correctly. The disadvantage is that I cannot sit facing their midpoint as this fires at the room doorway.

The second option is they fire down the long length of the room which works apart from again my furniture does not face them and a sofa has to be in the way. It's not feasible to have any other placement as the TV is in the opposite corner to the above second position.

Just wondered if anyone has had any experience trying this before I do all the humping around to try...  Speakers are Kudos X2's.

Cheers all...J

Unfortunately their is only one way of properly answering your question, your going to have to try both options......

Yes , I have mine either side of a tv and across from a room corner, with hot seat somewhere in the middle back wall of a 8x4ish metre room, so similar shape.

works better for me than any other option, and I have tried them all, at least what's possible with other things going on.

Thanks Tobyjug, that's very much what I have in mind, and may well be the only way to get the sweet spot. Is good to hear it works for you.

Thanks also Wenger.....I fear you are right, just need to set aside the time to try. Always good to ask on here too though.

Trying is indeed the only way! So much depends on fine detail of the room and its furnishings, the specific speakers, and indeed the rest of the system, that it is impossible to predict with certainty. Indeed, sometimes a completely 'wrong'setup can sound so right!

in an L-shaped room, sitting in the larger part the L and facing across it, that section of the L about 12 ft wide and total length about 18 ft, with IMF TLS50 speakers, my brother-in-law was forced for WAF reasons to have one speaker directly in fromt of the right hand end of the sofa very close to the facing wall, and the other speaker at right angles, with its back to the left hand wall, only a foot or so beyond the front line of the sofa and 3ft left of its left hand end. Amazingly, it sounded great, though the left -right balance control (he had one) needed shifting off centre.

if you have difficulty finding best positions, REW software (free, though you need a suitable measuring microphone) can be very useful for seeing what is happening with the sound (more on this forum if you search)

Check out the Herbie's Giant Fat Gliders.   The make a lot of difference to moderate the bass in my room.
