Does your hi-fi replay need to sound like live music?

I hear the term used here often that some level of gear gets one closer to the sound of live music. I don't play a musical instrument or often enough hear music played live that I have a real ear for how a given instrument is 'supposed' to sound. Even if I did, an instrument's sound will vary per manufacturer and venue, etc.

Most of my listening is studio recorded rock - amplified music often with intentional distortion and production qualities. While I can appreciate the timbre of acoustical instruments during replay in my room, I'm more taken by the quality of the recording and the artist's energy than any thought towards the authenticity of what that performance might have sounded like live in the studio, let alone conjuring comparisons of what the artists mights actually sound like,  live in my room.

So maybe it's better for hi-fi replay to sound like the hi-fi relpay for which it was engineered and mastered, rather than attempting to mimic live music.
