272 lacking sparkle

Posted by: maze on 29 June 2017

Hi just purchased a used 272 from naim dealer, it's a great upgrade over my 172, more detail, deeper soundstage and separation of individual instruments in a recording, however I do find it lacks a bit a sparkle in the upper treble, which I also noted from the 172. Admittedly sound has opened up over the course of 48 hours.

Rest of the system is Nap200 none DR, nac 5 cable and Harbeth P3 speakers, I also noticed the same effect through the SBL's I owned previously, so not a speaker issue IMO.

Have also owned Supernait, no problems and nait XS and Nait 5i in the past, all no issues here.

What I am talking of is air, space and a bit of sparkle.

Sounds the same on all sources, LP12, Flac and wav files streamed from the nas.

I know responses will guide me to XPS or 250DR, I'm not sure that's going to change the overall sparkle, I may be wrong.

Or maybe it's because I have some of the best speakers in existence. Who knows? Who cares?

I have only had a limited experience of the 272, but I would conclude, it sounds very good bare and exceptionally good with an XPSdr.

With  good speakers and good cables then I can for certain understand why, it could well be an end point for many..

I heard one today and it was very good indeed but I have to say Tidal sounded pretty bland compared with a feed from a UnitiCore.

I am buying back my recently departed 250 dr,because I have a pair of gray birch Dynaudio special 40's on the way.So it will be 272/Xpsdr/250dr>Naca5>Dyn Special 40's...really looking forward to this, third week in July,I am told.

There will be some who care and some who don't. Perhaps you could do those who care a favour by unplugging the Super Lumina wires and reverting to standard Naim cables and NAC A5 just to see if the great speakers of yours are still singing to their best capabilities. Though I understand the exercise may be pointless as you may not care anymore since the system is sounding stellar.

The superlumina speaker cable is quite a bit better than naca5

its reflected in the price after all

Are the speakers toed in? This should lift the treble a bit, I get the impression you haven't done with placement yet.

If you wan't a methodical approach look up "sumiko masterset" with your favourite search engine, I found it quite useful for positioning non boundary speakers.

The target rack, if it's one of those steel and mdf ones may be another problem but not the one you're posting about. At some point it will be worth trying Fraim or isoblue (the flatfish uses something else he claims is very good with a 272 system too).

Proac Tablette 10 are the best speakers in existence

Posted on: 01 July 2017 by hungryhalibut

Quite so. That's why I said mine are some of the best; to allow room for the Tablettes to take the top slot.

Proac tablette 10, are arguably the best speaker i have never heard...

I'd love to try some as they look perfect - tiny sealed boxes that sit by the wall, which is where all speakers should be. But I don't need a second system and the Tablettes, not withstanding the fact that they are the best out there, are unlikely to be as good as the SL2. Though they may be, of course.

Good man, I reread your post and I stand corrected.

For the money an absolute steal, close wall placement, top and midrange to die for and enough bass for the right room.

Since this turned into a ProAc Tablette thread... Has anybody compared the older Tablette Anniversary with the new Tablette 10? Quite a while ago I listened to the Anniversary (driven by an XS2), but thought (staying within the original theme of the thread) Neat's SX3 had more "sparkle". Anymore "glitter" with Number 10? [Still talking about ProAc, not Downing Street -- obviously no "glitter" in Whitehall these days... ]

Thanks to Hifiman, I've spent a happy hour listening to Nick Drake's Family Tree. It's a brilliant album, and while I confess I've not been listening for sparkle, it does sound rather wonderful, even with a ropey old 272 that's not real Hifi because it has two things in one box.

HH, correction, it's much worse than that... it's three things in one box...

Streamer / DAC / pre-amp!

In other words it can't possibly sound as good as it actually does!

Posted on: 01 July 2017 by hungryhalibut

Silly me. Maybe it's four if you count the headphone amp.

Posted on: 01 July 2017 by The Strat (Fender)

HH - you protest too much.  No one has said it's ropey just not quite on the same level as other options.  Calm down old chap it's only the stereo

Five if you count the power supply, although I think I remember that you use an XPS, so four would be right....

Don't forget a dab radio if it's fitted

Yes so that's six things. No wonder HH isn't sure that he should be enjoying it.

I think it also comes with a hearing aid connection....some of the old boys need it..
