System on a Fraim - is it supposed to ring like a bell?
Posted by: kevin J Carden on 04 July 2017
Seeking some quick feedback from Fraim Users please.
In the process of doing a quick 'clap test' to check out my room acoustics I noticed that my system, mounted on Fraim glass on cups and balls placed on the shelves of a Hutter rack, quite literally rings quite loudly for a couple of seconds each time I clap. Is this normal ?
I will likely play around with it to see if removing the glass makes a difference, but before I pull the system about I'd love to know if others experience the same thing with Fraim glass and what opinions are regarding the merits/demerits of this phenomenon.
Clapping close to the system increases the effect of course, but it is clearly audible even when I clap from across the room...
Perfectly normal. I first noticed the ringing effect while installing my SN2, but it never intrudes, or is even noticeable in every day scenarios and while in use. There was a thread on the topic a little while ago that should give a little more insight on why Naim gear rings. See below.

There's also posts to tell you how the ringing can determine which was up your glass should go!
Thanks both, I'll read that thread through this evening.
Is it the boxes or the glass that rings? I can hear that the NDS and 552 each ring at different frequencies- maybe the because the boxes/mass of the contents are different or perhaps I have one of the glass shelves upside down!
The NDS rings like a bell. If the dog barks, if someone coughs, then the NDS joins in. It makes no sense to me, but supposedly, damping it is a bad thing :-/
mine is on a bamboo Quadraspire rack, so I wouldn't blame the Fraim.

It's the boxes that ring. They ring regardless of what they're standing on. The effect was first noticed by a friend who was waffling away as he picked up the SN2 as we were about to put it in place, stopped in his tracks and said, 'Wo. That's really weird. Listen.' Sure enough, talk to Naim gear, and it talks back.

It's American Independence day. Similar, I can see how you muddled them up.
They are meant to ring, so don't panic!
Part of the design - all the resonances are in one place and the insides are designed not to be as sensitive to that particular frequency, so it sounds better seems to be the logic. The alternative is not to have it ring and spread-out the energy over a wider bandwidth at a lower level and then no possible engineering solution to isolate the innards to all frequencies as can be done from just one or two resonant frequencies.
In any case it sounds better when it all rings - it concerned me at first but experiment proved the sound is best when it rings.
There is a solution - a very heavy box that rings at such a low frequency you can't hear it - Statement!
So ringing is ok.
DB.
I put Herbie's Fat Gliders, from Herbie's Audio Lab, under my speakers. I have Proac D40R's. The Gliders damp enough vibration that the Fraim does not pick up the feedback. I can turn the preamp up to 1:00 or higher with the tonearm on the record and get no audible feedback. These are very inexpensive in the US. Just over $100 per speaker. Worth a try if the ringing is an issue. They eliminate excess bass too. I can't imagine going back to my pre Herbie days.
My NDS sits on atacama evoque se shelf ... NDS sits squarely on all 4 feet witb no wobble and it hardly rings at all ... it seems quite innert ... like a brick.

That's strange. Have they changed the design? Is yours new?

That still leaves us with the NDS joining in with the music, thus increasing the noise floor, I would have thought.

I can't see, at any level, the gist of that comment. Care to expound SongStream?
My 272 sings only when tapped. The 250 not so much. Am I missing out?
My NDS is a 2012 .... I tried it again there is a slight ring .... I think the 40mm thick bamboo shelf is acting as an energy sink.... perhaps the glass reflects it???? Anyway the NDS/552 are tuned to 4hz .... so vibration should not be an issue.

It's sarcasm. They say it's the lowest form of wit. Personally, I kind of doubt that.

Double checked mine it does ring a bit ..... not enough to 'ling along with max'!
