Wired or wireless

Dear Forum

I've just moved to a  new house, and unfortunately the master socket for the broadband is next to the front door, whilst my TV, PS4 and hi-fi aren't!

I can try to put an ethernet cable (probably under the carpet) from the router, down the hall and into the lounge with a switch attached to then run cables to my hi-fi, etc., but am not sure whether to do this myself, or ask a carpet fitter to help, as I don't want to have parts of the carpet lift.

Or, do I just rely on a wireless connection to my streamer, but I'm not sure what, if any, impact that would have on sound quality.

There is however another phone socket in the living room, so I was wondering whether it's possible to move the master socket functions to this better placed socket?

I'm with BT Broadband but can't see anything on their website that would help, so any thoughts/advice/guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Nigel

Then I agree with Chris, I think there's something wrong.

There can be an increased noise floor, but you shouldn't be getting hums and ticks or popping sounds.

Then I shouldn't.  The fact remains though, they were real. And only noticeable during night, absolutely inaudible during day. And only to the right channel - to add to the mystery. All went to normal after connecting the ethernet cable.

The "only to the right channel" is a fascinating observation, I really can't hypothesise anything that could explain that!
That's going to give me splinters from too much head scratching!

However, as now it's all OK with a wired connection, then all's well.

Sounds like your network is picking up some sort of interference over WiFi. Maybe a faulty SMPS on or near a wireless device?

Hi

Just thought that I'd give a quick update. I managed to borrow some electricians 'fishing wire" (at least I think that's what it's called) from someone at work, and bought some flat CAT 6 ethernet cable. I managed to run the cable under the carpet and it 'sat' really well so there's no visible trace of it being there. Bought a netgear 5 port unmanaged switch and now have TV box, NAS, PS4 and most importantly, ND5 XS all connected.

So far it's worked a treat, and the connection is rock solid, so well happy and I saved £130 by not having to pay for the master socket to be moved. Might treat myself to the next Bowie box set with the savings!

Anyway, thanks for all of the comments above, much appreciated.

Best wishes, Nigel

Good stuff, I use flat Ethernet cable here on some of my runs and put under the underlay and it works a treat.
