NDS temperature

Posted by: Richieroo on 06 July 2017

Hi my system has been connected up and on for nearly 2 weeks .... I have checked all components temp and all are luke warm appart from NDS... This is pretty hot .... probably about just under 40deg... I can keep my hand on it ..... to me this is really surprising... is this normal? my previous 272 ran much cooler.... I would be really grateful for other forum members to check theirs...... try putting your hand on top of the casework ...midway towards back.....

The weather's pretty warm at the moment. How warm is the room itself ?

If you go into the settings there is a way to see the temperature inside the player. The streamer will always be warmer than other boxes - I was told that it's the streamer board. The 272 will remain cooler because it has magical properties.

Hi my NDX tends to run rather warm as well.. but not hot. It's a first generation NDX bought from new not long after launch and still going strong .. so no obvious issue with running at a slightly higher temp than some other devices. However 40 degrees Celsius does sound quite high.

BTW not aware of the temperature display that Nigel refers to above.

Quite - there is a lot packed into the NDS. As well as the heat from the streamer board HH mentions, there is a fair amount of heat dissipated from the numerous regulators on the digital and analogue boards.

I'm also very surprised how warm my NDX feels particularly in the recent hot weather.

My SuperUniti had one so I, wrongly it now seems, assumed that the other streamers would have them too. I've just checked my 272 and it doesn't. Oh well. If you can cook an egg on the top it's definitely too hot.

I looked into this back in 2014 & took a few measurements & notes.  Today spurred on by this thread, I've retested.   I use a Fluke multimeter with a temp probe & a Fluke IR.   My NDX is located in a wood rack with enclosed bottom, top & sides. (see my profile pic)  top & sides all have a 15mm air gaps, the rear aprx 80% open.     None of my heat is from the transformer as it has a T-XPS, not that I would expect much heat from the transformer & associated parts.

I measure case temperature on the case top about 100mm from & in line with the left side front panel profile change line,  this is more or less in the middle of the  streamer board (PCB).     This morning the room ambient is 24.4'c.   The case temp is 36.3'c

2014 measurements:  Room ambient was 20’c,    case temp was 36.7’C.  After playing 1 album case temp changed to 37.2‘C & remained at the same temperature of continuous playing for 3 hrs.

Note:    After installing new firmware – from 3.23 to 4.0.07 the case temp on idle reduced to 32.4’c & T-XPS case temp is cooler.    I'm not able to confirm it was firmware that caused this,  but comparing ambient vs case temp it does seem that different firmware changed something as it appears to be running aprx 5'c cooler than with the original firmware:

2014  20/36.7 (16.7'dT)     Firmware change  21/32.4 (11.4'dT)       Today  24.4/36.3 (11.9'dT)

Hi ... I don't know how hot it actually is ...... it is located on an open shelf ... with a shelf 22mm above it ..... I have now removed shelf above to see if this has had an effect. Player has been playing flacs 24/7 ...... for last couple of weeks room was around 23 deg yesterday. It shocked me how hot it got ......... I will let it idle for 24 hrs to see if that makes a difference. This has very latest firmware.....

As HH has said you can find the streamer's temperature using the remote. Settings (spanner button) > factory settings > system status > temperature.

When I checked, I don't have a temperature option.

It's not an option but the temperature info is listed in system status (but I'm sure you already know this)

I just checked the settings pages on my NDS and it seems I don't have temperature option (or info) either. I agree the case does feel warmer than the other cases.

I'd not worry and just get on with enjoying your new kit. It doesn't sound overly warm from your first post and if the room is already at 23deg...

That's what I meant, temperature info. But it's not there.

Sincere apologies Clive & HH. You are correct of course. As I was upstairs I checked for this info on my UQ2 which does have it but it is not there for the NDS as you have both indicated.

Another question ..... will the NDS get hotter when processing???

Posted on: 07 July 2017 by james n

There's not going to be much (if any) difference between just idling and playing music. Why are you so worried ?

Posted on: 07 July 2017 by Richieroo

Well currently I have the unit running 24/7 on random ..... and I was shocked at how hot it was ..... thought I may be pushing it a bit.... I will check to see how hot it is when I get home tonight ... as I have removed shelf....  at the moment it reminds me of the old musical fidelity George Foreman amplifiers!!!

Ah yes the old MF A1 - that was a scorcher of an amp. Great idea but...

Your NDS sounds fine and is just running a bit warmer than usual due to the unusual (for UK summer) weather

I doubt thats the cause,  besides which Richierroo is located in Lancashire & local temps have hardly touched 20'c in the last week.   Room temp is another thing,  it can be expected that if the room ambient goes up by 2'c you can expect the unit case temp to go up by a similar amount.       Final point is "running hot" is relative to a persons expectations.  If Richierroo can get a simple household/garden thermometer & lay it on top of the case for 5 minutes,  then we can get a better idea of what his idea of a hot NDS case is.

Posted on: 07 July 2017 by james n

Ok Mike but if the room temperature is already 23'c then i'd expect the NDS temperature to be at least 10-15 deg above this. I wouldn't be concerned, but it'll be interesting to see what the final case temp is and put this one to bed...

I remember the musical fidelity A1, I had convinced myself this was the amp I needed, you could probably have fried eggs on it. My dealer played the A1, and then brought out this shoebox called a nait, there was no contest. In the end I walked out with a nac62/nap90, and no change in my wallet.

I had the monoblock versions of the A1 (so I could do the full English).

They sounded OK I recall.

i have the nds too. Outside it is 33 degree celsius now and inside it is hot, 25 degree i think, perhaps 26. My nds is hot, but i can keep my hands on it. my linear ps is hotter.   But if you can't keep your hands on it, there may be a problem. I would put off the ps of your nds for the night and eventually ask naim audio support.

I've not really been bothered that much by mine which is more warm than hot. If you want heat try a Sky Q box - I'm sure it's possible to fry eggs on them!
