NDS temperature
Posted by: Richieroo on 06 July 2017
Hi my system has been connected up and on for nearly 2 weeks .... I have checked all components temp and all are luke warm appart from NDS... This is pretty hot .... probably about just under 40deg... I can keep my hand on it ..... to me this is really surprising... is this normal? my previous 272 ran much cooler.... I would be really grateful for other forum members to check theirs...... try putting your hand on top of the casework ...midway towards back.....

In winter, my cat regularly sleeps on my Sky HD box, which strongly suggests it's the warmest surface in the house.

I doubt thats the cause, besides which Richierroo is located in Lancashire & local temps have hardly touched 20'c in the last week. Room temp is another thing, it can be expected that if the room ambient goes up by 2'c you can expect the unit case temp to go up by a similar amount. Final point is "running hot" is relative to a persons expectations. If Richierroo can get a simple household/garden thermometer & lay it on top of the case for 5 minutes, then we can get a better idea of what his idea of a hot NDS case is.
It was definitely warmer than 20 degrees in Lancashire yesterday... Interested in this subject as I will be plugging my new NDS in when I get home in a couple of days
Have same experience with NDS. As room gets warmer, NDS case gets disproportionately warmer/hotter non-linearly. I've bought a USB fan and put on timer during day. As long as there is airflow around NDS, the case temperature is acceptable, even in warm days. I have asked Naim many a time about this who say it's ok and no long term damage can be caused. I prefer to be more cautious. On the anticipated very hot days I do switch off the PS555s.

i do the same when it is specially hot, like more than 33 degrees outside. I am cautious too.
Just got home NDS feels more than 40degC. Switched off. Even my 552 feels hot which it never does!
I leave in the south of France. Today, the outside temperature was about 35 degres Celcius. The top of the NDS is hot, but I worry on my NAS (QNAP fanless) and my JS2 powering the NAS. JS2 is much much warmer than NDS today ! It makes like a small heater in my appartment...
Guys this is all pointless unless you measure & post the actual temperature, 'feels hot' is how it feels to you, it does not tell forum readers how hot in degrees celsius (or fahrenheit) it is.
Well as an amateur barista in training... hot to me is about 65 degrees... i.e. Unpleasant to maintain touch for more than a sec or two... and if the NDS case top was 65 degrees I would say that was too hot for healthy operation...
My uniti serve gets hot and for peace of mind I also got a small usb fan which I turn off for listening sesions. Works a treat
Right got home without shelf above unit about 25% cooler.... I am amazed as the shelf is at least 20mm clear and open on all 4 sides..... so there is plenty of free ventilation around perimeter....my fluid dynamic gut instinct must be .... ah not good..
The usb fan .... do you run this from the usb port at the front....????
Richieroo posted:Well currently I have the unit running 24/7 on random ..... and I was shocked at how hot it was ..... thought I may be pushing it a bit.... I will check to see how hot it is when I get home tonight ... as I have removed shelf.... at the moment it reminds me of the old musical fidelity George Foreman amplifiers!!!
Having some old MF amps, I can confirm that the heatsinks get too hot to rest a hand on -probably 60-something C, even without playing anything. Not a problem for semiconductors ( assuming they are appropriately connected to the heatsink), however heatsink temperatures of 100C+ might be a cause for concern (depending on the semiconductor type and the effectiveness of their mounting to the heatsinks).
if concerned best ask Naim what is max acceptable heatsink temperature.

No, from a spare plug socket with an adapter.
552 pre - not much above room temperature.
NDS streamer - pleasantly warm to the touch.
NS01 server - could substitute for a 'George Forman' grill anytime.

I forgot to check the NS01 as it sits in a different room. Maybe that explains why I rarely need to turn the radiator on in that room. Thank goodness it's fitted with a fan.

i have the js2 too. Very hot. last week we had 35 degrees outside, i switched off the js2 and all my system...the js2 was the hottest.

the serve have to not be hotter than 30 degrees....i switched it off last week.

I was advised by Naim that using the front USB for power was not a good idea. I wasn't considering using it for a fan, but even so, I would proceed with caution on that one.
After several experiments have found nds does not like shelf fitted above with 22mm gap and open all 4 sides. I have ordered a small usb fan and on low speed will aim it at the air gap .. from the back .... The shelving arrangement suits my needs... so I am reluctant to remove it permanently... I am hopeful about the mini fan ... Will let you know how I get on. I am surprised just how much heat this streamer produces.....

100%, taking power from USB is watts, watts is energy & energy is heat, more heat.
Richieroo, sorry but you are barking up the wrong tree, there are thousands of NDS out there working very happily at whatever temperature they naturally run at. And as yet you have not said what your temperature actually is, please can you do this, then we might agree (or not) that it is running hot. If it is indeed running too hot, then the solution is a return trip to Naim, not a fan.

he said that it was so hot that he couldn't put his hands on.
Hi NDS without shelf above feels OK yes it is fairly warm but not hot .... if I put shelf above it gets fairly hot. I don't know the precise temp ... but without shelf NDS feels not too far of temp of other psu and 552/500.

How hot is that then?
If it gets too hot it will shut down won't it? I know my Superuniti had that function along with a warning in the display.
Just over lukewarm warm with no shelf ...... it's common sense ... you know when so with something is flipping hot! 43 degrees is just about tolerable ... at its hottest with shelf I estimate it was under that by around 3-4 degrees or so.
