NDS temperature

Posted by: Richieroo on 06 July 2017

Hi my system has been connected up and on for nearly 2 weeks .... I have checked all components temp and all are luke warm appart from NDS... This is pretty hot .... probably about just under 40deg... I can keep my hand on it ..... to me this is really surprising... is this normal? my previous 272 ran much cooler.... I would be really grateful for other forum members to check theirs...... try putting your hand on top of the casework ...midway towards back.....

It's like Chinese whispers in here. The OP originally said ....

I'm which case probably nothing Wrong at all. A quick email to Phil at Naim will soon put the OPs mind ar rest. I've had an NDS and 555PS DR and frankly haven't  given it a second thought. It works and hasn't burnt the house down. Perhaps there's more in life to worry about?

If it gets too hot it will shut down won't it? I know my Superuniti had that function along with a warning in the display.

Naim power amps shut down automatically at an internal temperature of 70 degrees C. The SU does this, but I think it's only the power amps that do.

Yes I think your're right. It did sort of occur to me after I'd said it.

The usb fan .... do you run this from the usb port at the front....????

I was advised by Naim that using the front USB for power was not a good idea. I wasn't considering using it for a fan, but even so, I would proceed with caution on that one.

100%,  taking power from USB is watts,  watts is energy & energy is heat, more heat.

Richieroo,  sorry but you are barking up the wrong tree,  there are thousands of NDS out there working very happily at whatever temperature they naturally run at.   And as yet you have not said what your temperature actually is,  please can you do this,  then we might agree (or not) that it is running hot.  If it is indeed running too hot,  then the solution is a return trip to Naim,  not a fan.

he said that it was so hot that he couldn't put his hands on.

Generally speaking, with metal surfaces most people can happily withstand temperatures in the mid to high 50s (Celsius), but few can keep touch with a metal surface of 60 upwards without severe discomfort, so it suggests 60 or more.

40, mentioned elsewhere, is barely above body temperature (37C), so not normally perceived as very hot.

In the building industry ...healthcare...water temperature is set at 43 degrees this is at a point where the water is hot but it will not scold. 43 feels fairly hot..... I reckon my casework was somewhere around that....it did not feel right. With the shelf removed.... it feels mildly over luke warm.

As per my previous post why not simply speak to Phil? Or put it on a top shelf?

100%  -  & if you do talk to Phil he will ask for the actual temperature in real numbers degrees celsius,  just like my previous post.

A bit of a digression from the subject, but just to observe that the subjective feel of too hot to touch or not depends on the material - metal different from plastic or liquid.

My previous life had H&S advisories that included touching metals & water.   Metals:   100'C -15 seconds   82'C - 30 secs  71'C - 60 secs     50'C continuous.            Water:    60'C -  5 secs      44'C  continuous.

I have just fitted a little USB fan ..... it fits perfectly at the back and at low speed is in audible .... it creates a nice gentle air movement over nds...which now has shelf reinstated. .. temp seem much much lower will report again tomorrow morning.

And I wonder what that's doing for the performance. No need at all please believe me. Oh well life is too short - play with fans if you must. If a fan was needed Naim would have fitted one.

It works great ..... unit  barely warm .... little fan not visible and barely audible ... delighted.
