New Uniti Core

Posted by: No quarter on 12 July 2017

i got word from my dealer that my Core has arrived,I will be picking it up today, and hopefully playing music from it shortly after.I have not bought I hard drive yet,so my plan is to plug a 64 Gig thumb drive into the front, connect the SPDIF out to my N272,turn on the app,and begin set up.I have read over the tutorial at the top of this forum, and it seems pretty straightforward for what I want to do initially.Does anyone have any advice for me,as to what watch out for, what not to do etc.?I will start looking for hard drives this weekend, but I am hoping to at least have it playing something later today.I have no NAS,so this is replacing all my music that currently sits on a western digital hard drive, plugged into my laptop.I have been using J-river to stream from the laptop.Eventually I will rip all my cd's,and want to transfer the music from the 2 TB hard drive to the Core. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Never seen my Core with a flashing light every 5 minutes, only flashes when pressed for a few seconds to turn off.

If it goes to Network sleep the logo and the CD button lights go off and the on/off light dims. The flashing is when it's waking up again.

Just installing mine after bringing it home earlier today. Initial setup seems fine including the installation of the Samsung SSD. The software update caused a wobble on reboot - not responding. But I managed to go through the initial setup again and all seems fine. Currently copying millions of files. I may try the coaxial connection once all is downloaded. The HiFi Critic article as I recall suggested that this had the advantage over the Ethernet route.

Let me know if you run into similar problems that I have had, mainly with the track stopping after 30 seconds or so of playback, when using SPDIF,and it saying "streamer not responding".

I am at work right now,but later today,I am going try and sort this out, with David's advice,I will change the network sleep time, but I am not convinced this is my problem, because the default setting is supposed to be 20 minutes, and my music was stopping in under a minute.I might also try powering down the 272 and Core, resetting the app,and router,to see if that solves it.

Yes I have been wondering about my suggestion too, because of the "streamer not responding" messages.  It's worth knowing in this context that the Core is regarded as a streamer by the app for the purposes of such error messages. If the Core goes into network sleep, it should still respond normally to network traffic. And I hadn't realised it was only playing for a minute.

You don't need your 272 to be connected to the LAN if you are connecting the Core by spdif to an already selected digital input. Obviously you won't be able to see the 272 on the app if you disconnect it from the LAN, but the music should still work.  So before you reboot and reset everything, you could just unplug the Ethernet cable to the 272. You need to have selected the Core in the app before you do this or you will get streamer not responding from the app because the 272 isn't responding.

Rebooting the router is definitely worth trying.

I've only used a network connection thus far but have a DC1 between the Core and NDS. I'll give the latter a try after dinner and report back. The only wobbler I had was with the sortware update but a wind back to the beginning with a fresh installation seemed to resolve that. I also backed up to my QNAP and ReadyNas 104 NAS drives without issue earlier today. Fingers crossed and much touching of wood

I should also add that I dumped my 6th not-so-smart BT Hub a few weeks back and went for a Draytek Vigor 2860 router and one of their network switches with a kettle plug mains lead- no discovery problems or dropouts which must also be helping. I should add that this was also on the advice of a couple of my Naim dealers who like BT routers NOT. Wireless performance of the Draytek also comfortably beats the Smart Hub.

if I had a niggle it would be a couple of bright white lights in a sea of green ones! Now where did I leave that green marker?

Now running via the DC1 into digital 1 input on the NDS. Playing for around 45 minutes without issue and sounding rather good. I've set standby on the Core to 60 minutes so let's see what happens when the magic hour is up!

And still OK. Just flipped back to the network streaming the same music and all seems fine.

Good to read from both your experiences. Thanks indeed for sharing them almost in real time. It is a lot of fun to read too. Now the burning question: How, in your views, does the Core S/PDIF SQ compare with Core and Serve UPnPs on.. classical and jazz?

I think the Core has the edge although the jury is out between digital and network connections. I have no idea if this would be the case running good old spinning HDDs but like what I hear with the Samsung SSD although for 1tb the price was a little eye watering

I like the fact that the Core runs cool and is totally silent with the Samsung drive so it lives on a spare shelf along side the other equipment.

Ravenswood10, been using a Core with spinning Seagate Pipeline 2TB for 6 months and agree with all your comments occasionally get a noisy disc when ripping but totally silent when listening to music and like yours is sited on the equipment rack.

Well guys,I have been trying everything I can think of,I started from scratch, setting up a new product,I unplugged the router,LAN cable, digital cable.I am now trying to use the Core directly into myDynaudio XD 600's,which take a digital feed.SAME PROBLEM,I am not too happy,it plays for 15 seconds pauses for a second, plays another 5 seconds, then stops...on the app,it says streamer not responding.JUNK!

Posted on: 24 July 2017 by No quarter

Maybe someone can tell me how to get tech support, which is unbelievable to me on a brand new product. After 15 seconds of playing a window pops up and says

Streamer not responding

Device,Uniti Core 413972

Streamer not responding

It does work in UPNP,but I specifically bought this product so that I can use both,I want to run my 272 off UPNP,and my Dynaudio's off SPDIF,so I need this to work.

It does sound to me like a fault in your Core. The phone number and email address for Technical Support is in the thread called Technical Support in the stickys at the beginning of the streaming audio room. I suggest phone not email as depending what they are doing, it can take a while to get a reply to an email.

I don't think it can output both at the same time, if that's what you are trying to do. Can you switch between the Ethernet and coax outputs ok?

Posted on: 24 July 2017 by No quarter

HungryHalibut,no I am not trying to run both at the same time, for UPNP,I select that in the app or the remote, then the albums appear. For SPDIF,I select digital 2 on the 272,which is the one I have assigned, and hooked up to.Then you select the albums by selecting the Core on the app,the problem is,I only get about 15 seconds in before it stops.

David,I live in Canada,so I really don't want to call overseas,I guess I will send them an email.

At this point,if my dealer will take it back,I might go with an Antipodes server, which he suggested in the first place.Unless I can sort this out,but I can not believe how many faulty products I have received since getting into high end gear, never had a problem with mid-fi stuff, but the sound...

Actually I think it can do this, but anyway that isn't what the OP is trying to do. I also wondering a little bit whether this is another 5.71 app issue. That might explain the streamer not responding messages but I don't see why the app would affect an already-playing spdif stream or make the Core restart....

David,I sent Support an email, also I noticed today that my iPad has updated on its own to the latest app version 5.7.1,but I thought it was still on the old app on Saturday.Maybe with all the resetting and unplugging I was doing?somehow it updated.

Just get rid of the stupid thing and get a nas. Life's too short.

Get the dealer to sort it out!

NQ, I've flagged this up for Phil Harris to take a look at but, I think he's on a well earned break this week, so better to contact Naim support directly via the support e-mail or phone number.  As you're in Canada, have you asked for help from your installing dealer or local distributor yet?

Either way, a mail or call to Naim support should get to the bottom of it, if no solution is found from dealer or distributor.

Posted on: 24 July 2017 by No quarter

Richard,I sent an email to Naim support,I have not brought it up to my dealer yet.

i have some new developments...I am now using UPNP again, and I am getting the same problem, but it plays for about thirty seconds now before stopping.

i went into settings>Manage music store, and it reads

Int hard drive

ATA samsung

READ ONLY

format NFTS

capacity 0kb

Available 0 kb

i also can see my external drive under manage music stores, and it says the same things with regards to "read only" and 0 Kb capacity and available

These things seem odd to me,read only, and 0 capacity,I wonder if I should delete it all?or re-format the drive and start over. Can anyone look at their settings and see if they seem to match mine? All these problems started when I added the music from my external drive, when I played only the CD's I ripped to the SSD,it worked good, but I only used UPNP at that time.

I looked at my Core which has a 500 GB Samsung SSD and that says read/write and the capacity and availability are non-zero.

I wonder if this is because your's is full. Why don't you use your PC to delete a few albums. Maybe that will make the Core reassess the state of your SSD? And maybe that will stop the music stopping issue.

Dont forget you must not delete from the Music folders but you can delete from the Downloads folder.

OK great.  Hopefully Naim support will be able to help you out.

I honestly think this problem has something to do with the fact that the Core power button flashes every few minutes,I am not sure why,but this continues to happen.
