New Uniti Core
Posted by: No quarter on 12 July 2017
i got word from my dealer that my Core has arrived,I will be picking it up today, and hopefully playing music from it shortly after.I have not bought I hard drive yet,so my plan is to plug a 64 Gig thumb drive into the front, connect the SPDIF out to my N272,turn on the app,and begin set up.I have read over the tutorial at the top of this forum, and it seems pretty straightforward for what I want to do initially.Does anyone have any advice for me,as to what watch out for, what not to do etc.?I will start looking for hard drives this weekend, but I am hoping to at least have it playing something later today.I have no NAS,so this is replacing all my music that currently sits on a western digital hard drive, plugged into my laptop.I have been using J-river to stream from the laptop.Eventually I will rip all my cd's,and want to transfer the music from the 2 TB hard drive to the Core. Thanks for any advice in advance.
I feel your pain.
Good luck with the swap of SSD. If they won't do it then I suggest getting a SSD drive to USB cable which costs very little on eBay and reformat the SSD on a proper computer. Then you could try introducing it to the Core again.

Thanks David, maybe they could even erase it at the store(Best Buy) where I bought it.There is still the issue of why does my power button continue to flash very few minutes.I am not sure if the SSD being too full has anything to do with that or not,but I am sick of messing with it.
I had exactly the same problem with my core. It would not recognise the recommended ssd drive. I tried about ten times to initialise it and gave up. Naim technical told me all was ok with core and it was my ssd. I did not accept this as ssd fail rates are very low. After giving up with the helpline I tried plugging a spare external drive into the USB port and immediately it then recognised the internal ssd and booted into life. All of my problems with the core have now gone away as I took it back for a refund. I do not want to be stuck with quirky issues that the manufacturers do not seem to be able to get on top of.

Thanks for that info MJL,good to know that I am not alone with these problems. Can I ask you if the external drive you plugged in was empty or did you have music on it?I have just talked to my dealer,so he is aware of my troubles now,he gave me the email of the tech guy at Plurison, which is the Naim rep in Canada.I am still going to try and exchange the SSD drive I have bought today on the way to work,or have them format it/erase the data on it.Also, did you ever get it to play music?...my problems all started when I tried loading my existing music from my external drive on to the Core SSD.I am sure my dealer will not leave me hanging, but he has limited knowledge of anything to do with computer stuff...as he put it toaday "I am a turntable and tube guy".
Hi.
The external drive had all sorts on it from documents to music and photos.
once the core recognised my ssd I was up and running. I ripped about 20 discs of which 10 had no data or were in odd song order. Others would not copy all of the tracks.
At this stage I was not confident with the product and threw the towel in. My dealer was a bit reluctant with the refund at first, but as a consumer this product was not fit for purpose.
I am now back to iTunes which to be fair has been flawless in copying and cataloging, even the discs the core failed on. The turntable has also got a dust off.
I hope you resolve your issues with the core as many seem to be happy with them.
Just a thought have you checked to see if it has the latest firmware? If not it's worth doing as mine was not at the latest level even on launch. In the menu, "check for updates", should be on version 1.4.
i find all these problems, never ending with the core , sad and a little catastrophic. 11 months after the uniticore launch, still and still problems. I am happy not having bought this product.
But i am sure no quarter will resolve this present problem. When all is working normally, the core is a very good product....
Some of us did and some of us are very happy so there must be something going on. I wish the OP well in resolving this and as much as we try to offer advice it's down to the dealer and Naim. If there's no satisfaction there's always a refund and an alternative such as a half-decent NAS or indeed a Melco as used to good effect by other forum members.
Thanks for all the replies everyone,I must say, this has been frustrating to say the least
BUT ,I FGURED IT OUT!!!
After one last try on my PC to delete music off the hard drive, suddenly I stumbled upon the Core Downloads and Music folders, which I had not been able to see before.Anyway, under downloads was ALL the music that I had copied off the external drive.Right click>delete>BAM!,it started deleting the (I think) corrupt files. It took about ten minutes to do,and after that,I checked the storage on the app...867 gb free, cool!
There was still all the CD's I ripped under Music>MQ,which is cool, meaning I don't have to rip everything again.Minus the CD's I had deleted via David's instruction yesterday, but that amounts to about 10 CD's I have to re-rip.
The next big thing...will they play without cutting out from UPNP and SPDIF.....YES!!!!,it works, what a revelation!
Now I am just going to add music bit by bit into the downloads folder on my PC... maybe tomorrow though ,Phew! What a relief!
I wish I knew what I did differently, but I don't,lol, but I am now listening to uninterrupted rips through SPDIF,and it sounds great!!
I want thank David Hendon especially for dedicating so much effort in trying to help me,for now this is sorted out.
Tony
Well done, feet up with a beer, and have a listen. 10 out of 10 for perseverance.
Hi Tony
i'm very pleased. I said Windows is a bitch before and it is often really hard to see folders in the Core. I always thought if you could back out of the inadvertent import, it would be OK. But doing that proved unbelievably difficult!
Now I suggest you just enjoy the music! Remember you don't have to import music from your USB HDD. You can just leave it plugged in the back and define it as a share (a share not a store!!). The Core will index the files and offer and play the music in the app but not try to move it from where it is.

Ah so not a pile of junk after all - told you so! Enjoy

Somewhat less than 11 months IIRC - I think it was first mentioned by Naim in October, and the first models available were out maybe just before Christmas(?)
NQ, why have you not contacted your dealer immediately, he would have given you the number of our hotline. Or just checking our website (purison.com)... We would have solved the issue within minutes... We have already seen this problem with a drive being full...
This Forum is not the place to do on-line trouble-shooting. Thanks to Davis and a couple of others who have been very helpful... But it is our job to support our customers. We have the tools to remotely fix issues for customers not as handy as you with computers!
Sorry not to have jumped into this tread earlier, I recognize I have not read the Forum for more than a week: I was super busy with dealer trainings for the release of the Atom... BTW, we started to ship Atom to our North American dealers on Monday....
NQ please contact me at 1-866-271-5689 ext 111. leave a message if I am not there, I will get it transferred by email.
David,
I have never relied on Windows to scan/browse networks and Windows 10 is not much better.
I am using ''Advanced IP Scanner'', it lists all devices with an IP address, you can then open them with a Browser, Explorer or other means. You open a folder within a device and you can map it for later direct access in Explorer.
Manu,i thought i could solve it on my own,and finally have with the help of the forum.
i did contact my dealer today, and got the plurison email from him.
i don't know why you want me to contact you still?
Yes, we were the first to ship Core and it was in December.
To know who is your dealer and make the contact...

Hi Manu
Thanks for the tip. I will give it a try. I always find mapping folders a bit hit and miss in Windows, although I have both my Core and Unitiserve mapped ok already.
But I t was a hoorah moment rather like NQ's recent one when I first got my Unitiserve downloads folder mapped a couple of years ago!

I sent an email to Naim last week, and still have not heard back. This morning I sent an email to the plurison rep,I thought my dealer said his name was Michael, not sure if that is you or not.anyway,I outlined my problems I was having, mentioned my dealers name etc. In that email. He has done nothing wrong by the way,I only called him a couple of hours ago...but I knew he was not good with computers.I am using indows 10,you mention you have seen this problem with the drive being full, maybe a heads up about that on the support simulator might help others in the future, but for now,I am ok.
Thanks
Can I expect an improvement in the sound of the Core "after burn in",or does that even exist on this product?Should I leave it playing around the clock for a few weeks, like I do with any other brand new gear?
Personally I did not notice anything, so would just use normally and switch off after use.
Same here. It let mine go into standby after 30 minutes of no activity and forget about it until I want to listen and the app wakes it up perfectly every time. It works perfectly with my NDS, Unitilite and QB so I couldn't want for more. My serve was rock solid so let's hope this one continues in the vein.
Just enjoy listening to it and try not to worry
I had a brand new one on dem for a couple of weeks and could clearly hear it burning in and sounding better.
I liked mine more after a few weeks, but I think that was what someone in another thread referred to as ear burn-in rather than Core burn-in, ie I got used to the sound of it.
Initially I used to swap between Unitiserve and Core often and found the Core sounded brittle and the US sounded smoother, but perhaps a bit boring. But I could relax into the Unitiserve sound and stop thinking about how it sounded. The Core still makes me sit up and think "what just happened?" more often. I've stopped swapping backwards and forwards, although both are still on my network, because life is too short to bother...I don't know which I prefer the sound of, but I do prefer the Core as a package, albeit still flawed.
