New Uniti Core

Posted by: No quarter on 12 July 2017

i got word from my dealer that my Core has arrived,I will be picking it up today, and hopefully playing music from it shortly after.I have not bought I hard drive yet,so my plan is to plug a 64 Gig thumb drive into the front, connect the SPDIF out to my N272,turn on the app,and begin set up.I have read over the tutorial at the top of this forum, and it seems pretty straightforward for what I want to do initially.Does anyone have any advice for me,as to what watch out for, what not to do etc.?I will start looking for hard drives this weekend, but I am hoping to at least have it playing something later today.I have no NAS,so this is replacing all my music that currently sits on a western digital hard drive, plugged into my laptop.I have been using J-river to stream from the laptop.Eventually I will rip all my cd's,and want to transfer the music from the 2 TB hard drive to the Core. Thanks for any advice in advance.

It would be a shame then, not to give it any burn in...and not hear it's full potential for months...or more.I think I am going to start burning mine in when I recieve my Dyn special 40's,which I will play 24/7 for 3 weeks straight,to get to 500 hours as quick as possible...might as well drag the Core along for the ride.

Might as well just get the C20. You know you want them.

Hey stranger!

No,actually the special 40's are plenty of speaker for my needs,I need more volume,I will just switch to the 600's.Remember,I was about to spend 5k on headphones, and went with these instead.

Good choice. I do wish you could hear C20 and compare to C1. I'm sure C20 can play louder and probably lower but curious how the highs compare between the 2. How the Esotar 2 compares in the 2 speakers.

You bought gray? I think red or gray would work well in your room. Looking forward to your thoughts.

I am. I know what you're getting but I also know what you have had.

I have noticed an improvement over time with the Digital output, not with UPnP...

the CD drive becomes also less noisy after about 10 rips...

No sign of your email, I'll investigate. As long as you have not received a "user unknown" reply, someone at Plurison has received it and I'll eventually get it.

BTW, I am the Naim Product/Brand Manager at Plurison. Everything regarding Naim in North America eventually reach my desk or my computer.  The fast track is my email.

Ok thanks Manu,in case you don't receive the email I sent,I am located in windsor Ontario, and my dealer is Glen, from Audio 2.I seem to have a handle on things now though, since I figured out how to delete those files (from full) off the SSD,it has worked great.Good to know about the digital output, this is what I am using right now,so I will stick with it for burn in purposes.

My comment on no noticeable difference, should be noted refers to up people. Hope this helps.

Have you not tried the SPDIF out? It is the main reason I wanted the Core over a standard NAS set up...which allows me to use it with my XD 600's directly, plus feeding a separate DAC,which will be a Hugo 2 in my case.Sad thing is though, the Hugo 2 is back-ordered until late August now.

Sorry, no I am just rebuilding my music system and got the bug after buying the muso. The muso only has optical which I have connected to the TV, and ethernet upnp. Next on my list is Nova and speakers. Even with just a Muso I have been impressed with the core and have been blessed with no problems to speak of, other than 6 cd,s which have a lot of tracks, and failed at the last track or two. Sent these off to Phil, to see if Naim could understand, as a cheap old pc drive easily ripped them

As I have posted before, the issue with formatting is a bug in firmware 1.4 which appears to be fixed in 1.5, which is not released yet (or wasnt when I last looked)

Maybe someone can help me here,I am still trying to figure out all my options on this app...I have a new pair of speakers coming this week(I hope),and want to play my Core 24/7 into them for break in.(SPDIF) Is there a way to select repeat on the app,so that an album repeats over and over,or even plays My whole library one after another?

Hi [@mention:65907191339557814],

You can select album / play list and set it to play, then pressing on the Now Playing bar you can use the repeat /loop icon on the now playing (Play Queue - screen), it is below the track timing / progress bar, right hand side - it is an oval with an arrow and the bottom.

Never used this myself, however should give you endless play back.

Hope this helps and it not stating the obvious (is so I apoligises!)

Or just play any radio station.

Run-in both as the iPad into the Core via the front USB port works well with BBC Music App. It meant I would not have missed the internet radio they dropped replacing the Uniti Serve.

The Core does not have the ability to play radio stations,so I want to play continuously off the music stored on the SSD,in order to break in new speakers, and the Core itself...at the same time.

Are you saying you can output internet radio from core bnc spdif via your ipad app connected to the core's usb input? Thanks.

Sorry. Was thinking of the nDAC USB port. The Core reads and plays files from the USB port.

I got around to trying this today Simon, works just like I want...plays the entire album, over and over.I am not sure how to do it with multiple albums, maybe a playlist? Also David,I finally got around to loading more music into the "downloads folder" on my PC,and it transferred on to the SSD,and even played without a hiccup.I just did "jazz at the Pawnshop" alone,to make sure it works, before I go too far this time. Next,I want to plug the external drive into a USB port, try playing it from there, without copying anything over...as you can tell,I am VERY cautious this time.By the way,the Jazz at the pawnshop sounds fantastic through SPDIF feeding the 272 via SPDIF,I believe it is an 88,or 96 kHz file,so sounds even better than my CD rips, now to find some of my 192khz files. One thing I am not clear about,do I just copy music into the downloads folder as is,do I have to create a folder in there first?...that is what I did for the one album I copied.I just want to make sure I can see it properly from the app.

You can add whatever tracks, albums, or whole genres to either a playlist or a play queue, and still have them on repeat if you want.

You can use whatever folder system you like to store your music in the downloads folder. The server doesn't see this, it uses metadata tags to present your music files to the streamer, not folders, so it will make no difference, just organise them in whatever way you find convenient. Just remember that this only applies to the downloads folder - not to CD rips.

Thanks Chris,I will try the playlist or Queue when I get time. One more question for anyone, does the Core know if the files I input are high-res or not,and put them in to appropriate folders,or do I have to sort that out myself?

Posted on: 02 August 2017 by David Hendon

Hello again!

Glad Chris sorted out the continuous play for you. That's not something I ever needed to find out about.

Regarding your concern over your Core importing all your files from you USB HDD, it really won't ever do that unless you tell it to import them, which is what you must have done last time. You just plug it in and if you haven't previously done so, define it as a share (not a store!) and the Core will scan it and show all of the music in the app. But the files will stay where they were. If you unplug the USB HDD again, the next time the Core rescans, which should be within a few minutes, it will drop all of the music from your USB from the app so that you only see files you can play.

Regarding the downloads folder in your music store, as Chris says you can do whatever you like because you alter this with your PC not the Core. I just have a folder for each separate album. The Core isnt putting stuff into your downloads folder unless you import music from somewhere else into your music store (like you inadvertently did last time!), in which case it puts rips from a Naim server into the music folder and any other files into the downloads folder. It doesn't differentiate between HD and non-HD, except in the case that rips that were made in a Naim server and then transcoded to MP3 will already be in the LQ folder in the music folder and the Core will respect that. The Core doesn't currently offer transcoding to MP3 so all of that is irrelevant if you haven't previously had a Unitiserve or HDX.

If you want to have a HD folder inside the downloads folder of your store, and put your HD downloads into that, you can do so. But you don't need to and it won't look any different in the Naim app.

best

David
