Hello and Nait 3 question!

Posted by: Smithfire on 13 July 2017

Hi peeps,

My name is Clive, I'm 50 and live in South Oxfordshire.

I love Naim stuff and once owned a nac 62, hi cap, 135's, LP12 setup...I have a Nait 3 at the moment and love it.

My question is what kind of cartridge can I use with the phono cards marked up a K.

I'm looking at buying a rega rp3 deck and was wondering which cart would be compatible with the above boards?

Many thanks for looking

Clive

From a quick search in the forum it seems that the K cards were intended for use with Linn MC catridges. No doubt you will get inundated later with suggestions of other suitable MC catridges you could consider.

As David says above, "K" on the boards usually applies to NA523 MC boards for low output MC cartridges.  If you look closely the board type should be etched into the PCB.

It's quite unusual for a NAIT 3 to have MC boards inside as this usually necessitated a special RF kit and mu-metal screen on the cover to prevent interference from the mains transformer.

With an RP3 you'd probably be best off with a MM cartridge, in which case NA522 boards should be used.

I have only heard a Nait 3 once.  I've been looking for a new TT cart.  Don't know your budget but Rega has a new lower cost MC.   Just released.  Audio Technica AT-F7 was recommended on another thread recently.   Also Dynavector 20x2L comes highly recommended.

Good luck

The boards in my nait are NA 523 K. Which are I believe, high output mc boards for use with carts like the troika etc. Was hoping not to have to shell out 200 quid on new mm boards. Are there any HO mc coils that would be a good match up to the Rega?

Cheers

The NA523Ks are for high quality low output MC cartridges.  Naim did not really recommend use of MC 523 boards in the NAIT 3, hence why I wrote that it's unusual to find them so fitted.

NA522 boards are fairly widely available secondhand.  Likewise there's a good secondhand market for NA523K boards.  All being well, you could change to NA522s and come out evens on the deal.  In your situation, with an RP3, it's exactly what I would do.
