SBL rebuild

Posted by: arb76 on 13 July 2017

My naxo is at Naim for repair/service so perfect opportunity to rebuild the sbls that i bought with it about 6 months ago...

I used a sharpened carving knife to slice through the sealant. It was a good seal yet, It all came off in one piece very easily.

LF driver box
You can see the 4 spike plates stapled on the underside.
(How the hell do you get those Staples out?)

The black grill - a diffuser?

Inside the boom box

Top plate

There is another gasket on the underside of the top plate, sealed to the boom box. It feels a bit squidgy, the top gasket feels firm which I'd expect (like the new gaskets I have). Has anyone ever replaced the lower gaskets? Are they even available? They look thicker than the upper gaskets.

What is this filler? - wool?

I will update upon completion.

The manual I have is for dbl, sbl, into and credo. (each with its own chapter)

Hi Willy.

In the paragraph before the paragraph where it says 'gently push down...' it says, and I quote - 'it is fitted with aluminium pads on its lower surface which the spikes on the stand top-plate should pierce when the loudspeaker is properly assembled'.

I might think it were a typo but it says it again a few paragraphs further down in more detail.

I suppose I could start not pierced and go from there if I'm not happy with the sound.

Thanks

When I had SBLs I preferred just the slightest indent but definitely not piercing. The reason for this is that they'll pierce really easily with just marginal excess force and then you'll end up with a non-parallel gap (which is how they were set up by the dealer and why I chose to redo them properly). I'd start out with them just resting on the pads if I were you.

I assume you've done the Ronseal filler job first...

Thanks all for the advice.

It's all back together and sounding great... And that's with the naps needing a service.

I went with just gently placing the LF box on the spikes and any indents into the plates would be under its own weight. I'm pleased with the sound at the moment but, that gives me the option of altering without having to get new plates.

Gonna get a couple of weeks listening in before sending the naps off...

Thanks
