Naim Unitiserve not ripping some CDs

On later versions of the US touching the Naim logo, front centre, ejects the cd.

I've ripped about 3,500 cds to the US without any real problems. Occasionally I'd need to re-rip if tracks were missed. Excessive noise is done to the cd I think - similar noise when ripping in a Mac.

The description in the OP is a farily accurate one of how US will treat some CDs.
Most commor reasons for a CD failing to rip the first time (or at all): badly manufactured disc (outside of the Red Book described parameters), copy-protected disc, cracked plastic, discoloured surface.

In some instances a second or a third try is needed. There is only one CD is my collection which would not rip at all - it's one of those rare, idiotic 'copy protected' CDs from mid 90's.

So far i've probably had about 20 CDs out of 1,800 that the Serve wouldn't rip. I'm up to T on my CD collection (I'm a slow ripper) and recently tried to rip "Mule Variations" by Tom Waits, which took my Serve offline three times! I wondered if it was a fault with the Serve so tried some other CDs with no problem, but the moment I put Mule Variations in it would hang and take my Serve Offline. Only thing I could do was switch the Serve off at the back and start again.

Pretty sure I had the same problem with that cd.

If Sony BMG had anything to do with the production of that disc, then it may have tried to install Sony's malware on your US. This would upset it somewhat. 

Or, if the disc had some form of Flash content (looking at you, Gorillaz) that could have also caused issues.

Not that it helps, NGENE, but I had the same problem with an HDX - the same software runs both, afaik,  this is why I have retained a separate CD player in my line-up, to play the thirty or so CDs that won't rip, and any new ones with similar mis-behaviour.  Some folks would call this an overkill (especially as the CD player is a CD555), but I just like to have all the bases covered.

Incidentally, I have to admit I'd never thought of copying the dodgy CDs onto CDR via my computer - thanks for that tip, I may now be able to sell my CD player

Strange, I used to own an HDX and ripped also the Tom Waits album but I can't recall having any issues with it ...

I only thought of copying on to CD-R on the PC because i didn't have another CD Player.

Yes it was a Sony disc but no flaw content or copy protection that I am aware of.  Landed up ripping it with XLD.

I have had this very occasionally but it's mostly discs from way back that are in some way peculiar.

More recently I had a double CD where one CD ripped fine in my Unitiserve but the other wouldn't rip properly (2 or 3 tracks ended up not being ripped, although it played fine on my CDX2 and in my car.  Anyway I returned it to the supplier which sent me another copy and that ripped fine. So I think the error correction in the Unitiserve isn't as good as in the CDX2.

Had similar problems - I found UnitiServe to be quite 'intolerant' of badly made CDs, when it came to ripping them well.

With those CDs I use my MacBook and dBPoweramp .

On one occasion a CD which UnitiServe just flatly refused to rip, came up with so many error reports, that I had to abandon a 'secure rip' option and just do a 'quick'n'dirty' rip - this was my Sting's '10 Summoner's Tales' which I bought when it first came out.

I've found a few CD's where some tracks didn't rip on my 2yr old US but on my previous older HDX they ripped fine? No obvious damage as they had remained untouched in their cases after the HDX rip? Just bought them again for around £5 a go. 

And US can be very noise, some of my ripping could be heard upstairs!

That doesn't sound right, mine just whirrs away, much like any other CD drive, and very rarely, if ever, fails to rip a disc properly. I would be concerned that whatever is causing that extra noise must also be causing extra wear and tear, so if I were you, I'd get it looked at.

RIP  bad cd on pc and then copy it to another blank cd  .then rip this one  , it usually works

I just picked up a 1995 cd - More Than This by Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music - from a charity shop. No obvious damage but n-Serve reported 'playing cd' and never started to rip. A MacBook/XLD combination ripped it with no problems.

And I forgot to mention it was just a handful of CD's that were around 20yrs old.

Just an observation ... but its probably that the Unitiserve / HDX will refuse to rip something if it senses there is an error; while the CDX2 (like all CD players) will play it regardless.  You might also find that the computer CD drive isn't able to rip the tracks perfectly (to match the AccurateRipDB checksum) but will rip it good enough there isn't an audible error.
