Sony NW-ZX2 users - SD card max size ?
Posted by: james n on 18 July 2017
I know we have a few ZX2 users here on this fine forum hence the question...
Max SD card size - I normally use 128Gb cards but wondered if 200Gb or bigger work fine with this player ?
Thanks
James
I've never tried one bigger than 128 in mine, but I'm sure Bert S posted some time ago that he had successfully used a 200. I see that you can now but 256GB as well......
Thanks Chris - i'll have a search back through the forum to see if i can find Bert's posts. I'll order from Amazon so i suppose i've got the security of sending it back if the 200Gb card is not compatible
200GB SanDisk in use here with out issue.
Regards, Russ
Cheers Russ - that's great to know it works ok
James
Also here 200 GB without any issues
even 256gb no problem...
Now it's getting expensive Emre
I'm also using 200gb micro card with no problems.

Cheers all - very helpful indeed. One more question if i may -
I use Shure SE846 IEMs at work. They play really nicely with the ZX2 and make a great combo. Anyone got any recommendations for over ear 'phones for use at home. I'd rather they can run straight out of the player as the Chord Mojo i've got on demo doesn't really do it for me unfortunately.
Budget is quite flexible

Surprised to hear the Mojo isn't working for you - are you using it as a headphone amp with the ZX2? I had the impression that the Sony really comes into its own with IEMs, and would struggle with over-ear headphones, but maybe someone has found a combo that works? I believe Sony make a headphone amp to pair with the ZX2, maybe that would be worth looking at?
Be careful with EU Volume caped ZX2, it won't drive anything but IEM as 846....
* So if you are thinking to use ZX2 EU Volume caped one for them, just forget it.
* Do you need a closed or open one? Open ones are making noise and taking noise.... so be careful.
* If you are using ZX2 US/JPN version you can go with a easy to drive ones, nothing like a HD800 or LCD4 or Elear.
* Massdrop got very good ones very often AK701 / Fostes th-x00 are excellent choices, specially fostex! Just go for it, zx2 US will drive them.
* Meze, audio quest got some good offerings as well with spending too much.
* If you are serious about headphones need a good amp with good cans 846 is nice easy and good build but a good source /amp and a HD800 is something else....
* i also strongly suggest to upgrade your 846 cable with a TRRS connection in order to use ZX2 in balanced mode, it opens up a little bit which is good for 846
sony got a headphone amp/dac which is old and expensive.... PH3 something which european model does not have a battery or something so useless
mojo is always the best solution without spending too much but ZX2 got a different SQ soft/warm even with 846s
As to your initial question 256Gb is the maximum size of a card right now and it works. With regards to headphones. I think the comments which are made are fair. The Sony works best with IEM's like the Shure SE846. If you want a better performance you would require a more recent model of Sony.
Headphones which I shortly checked and which seemed to work pretty well are the Ultrasone Edition EX8 and the Edition M. I am not 100% sure if the juice will be enough to bring them to sing at the best level. So please check before.
James, I have just got some Beyerdynamic AKT5p headphones to go with my A&K70. It, obviously I suppose, drives them easily, and they sound teriffic. Maybe they'd work well with the Sony, depending on its power output.
Mine works great with my MDR-Z7 headphones.
Any of you users of these SD-card-based portables connecting them to your car hifis?
I currently have a 160MB iPod classic in my car and have had to compromise on the size of my files (and hence quality) to fit on my 22k tracks. One of these portables with a 256MB card would increase my capacity, but...
I have a concern that car interfaces work more smoothly with the Apple devices simply because they're more of a standard, and have been around longer. My experience of playing tracks from memory sticks hasn't been entirely positive - the car systems seem unable to cope with doing a random selection of the tracks (and, for example, restart at the beginning and repeat the same sequence of tracks).
My Sony connects to car stereo via Bluetooth and plays fine. Not so clever with track information - it picks up all the data for the first track played but does not update as new tracks are played. The music though plays without problems.

Thanks again for the guidance chaps - a few options to look into there. The Mojo is a very neat little thing - love the build, styling and the lighting. Sounds very good too but i just didn't find it as engaging to listen to compared to the Sony. Both were driving my Shure IEM's but with the Mojo fronted by my Melco (and using the standard Shure cable as the Mojo wouldn't support my normal TRRS plugged cable. I suppose the Mojo does give me a few more headphone options though. Interesting comments about the EU volume capping - i've disabled all the SQ functions and rarely go above a 1/5th full volume which is plenty loud enough so i'm not sure if mine has this limit. How do you tell ??
Try the zx2 with a over head cans, but if you bought it from europe it will be volume caped
ı bought a sony z7 cans with an advice from headfi to find out later that they dont work with EU zx2, later i bought an mdr1a, still not good enough, maybe i am deaf a little
mojo drives everything, even hd800
if your home setup wont be mobile you can always buy a headphone amp and commect to your tt/stearmer/cd
a nice violectric 200/gustard h10 maybe?
Or even arcam/rega/creek options
