272 random events!

Posted by: nitrous on 23 July 2017

something strange seems to be happening with my 272, I do hope this doesn't' mean it needs a trip to Salisbury

firslty the unit keeps muting itself randomly. Currently I have checked for other interference from say other remotes, lights etc., couldn't find an issue, so deactivated front logo mute in system options, so far a good few hours without issue. However, I now notice that without any input from myself the front panel randomly shows the input, before going back to 'sleep' setting which in have as the clock. I don't remember it ever doing this.

i have all app ( 5.7.1) and streamer (4.4) software up to date as far as I can tell.

any thoughts? Or is just a bad day for 272?

Do you have another remote close by that could have low batteries or is faulty. I have seen odd things like this happen for this reason.

Slim68, checked that, all remotes hidden, curtains closed; in case a neighbours remote was to blame. Fault still persisted until I turned logo mute off. So far no random muting..........

thanks

In respect of the random screen action alternating between input info and the clock, I may have answered my own question. Neither of my iDevices where on the current iOS 10.3.3 so have updated them and so far the screen has settled down.

tomorrow I may switch the mute logo back on, right now back to the music!

I read the title of the thread and thought wow, that's an awful lot of random events. You could write a book.

^^^ha!

thread titles are always a tricky matter. How to attract the right audience without wasting other people's time.......

It's unlikely to be anything to do with the IOS version. My idevices are on 9.3.5 and none of my streamers (which include a 272) produce random events like you describe.

David, sadly you seem to be right. I'm still getting random screen changes, not muting at least disabling the logo mute has 'fixed' that issue. I've avoiding it but a restart (XPS DR) is now next step.

I'm going to hazard a guess that you have a faulty touch button controller, as described in https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...of-its-own-unitiqute. Or some related failure that will require service. I'm assuming there are similarities between the UQ and 272 touch controller circuits.

I have the same problem with one of my two Unitiqute 2s, including cases where the volume would suddenly start increasing on it's own. Yikes.

My newer UQ2 replaced my faulty UQ2 in the exact same location, with exact same network connection, where my first UQ2 was located, and works flawlessly. So some of the speculation about network issues/remote control issues/other remotes/sunlight/etc being the culprit can be discounted. My original UQ2 got moved into the bedroom. As I don't use the touch screen, and it works flawlessly with the Logo Mute disabled, I'm not particularly motivated to get it fixed.

I'm not under warranty, and as I can workaround the problem by turning off Logo Mute, just as you've worked out, I haven't bothered to get it fixed. But if you are under warranty, I'd suggest you do send it in to get addressed. Though it may be challenging to catch the intermittent issue. My sense, at least in my case, is that it is more prone to occur when the unit gets hot (exacerbated by high Summertime ambient temperatures).

Also refer to: https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...ute-volume-problems, for another example of this issue.

Hi Tamarin, many thanks for your input. Your analysis was my original thought, however the front panel was/is still doing other strange things which started immediately after the 5.7 app update. Of course that could be a coincidence.

last night I loaded the 5.7.2 update and the front panel is now responding much much quicker than it was after 5.7. I have now reactivated the logo mute and will monitor behaviour over the next few weeks.

Sure thing, Nitrous. I'm happy for you if my hunch was wrong. I'm still on app version 4.9!, so I don't have any experiences on whether the newer versions of the app can also cause these kinds of behaviors. (I don't intend to upgrade the app on my iPhone until I no longer see frequent reports of new app version issues on the forum).

Please report back on how things turn out.

I can't comment on 272 specifically,   but app 5.7.1 was a dogs breakfast whereas the latest release 5.7.2 is pretty much working as it should.

Mike, Issues have reduced since 5.7.2 update, but I definitely think this app related. Do you think the streamer or app sort of 'checks in' now and again with each other and this is what is activating the front panel screen?  I can certainly replicate the effects by standing in front of the streamer and opening the app on iPad, immediately the app wakes up and finds the 'room' the front panel lights up.

At least it hasn't muted itself for no reason so far tonight!

Hi Nitrous,  sorry but I'm not that familiar with 272 to comment on its reactions to app activity.   All I can say is about my NDX,   its display does not randomly light up without a manual (actual) command from the app.    However your comment on "opening the app on iPad, immediately the app wakes up and finds the 'room' the front panel lights up"   Thats what my NDX has always done, so I have to assume your 272 is doing what its supposed to do.  My NDX display opens (lights up) on the input name it was last set to.    Without any further app commands my display goes off after 30 seconds because thats what I have the display timer set to.

Posted on: 26 July 2017 by nitrous

Mike, yes exactly, activating the app deliberately wakes the front panel up, I would expect that. It's the rest of the time, when nothing is being touched and the screen wakes up seemingly by itself for a while and then goes off. I too have mine set to sleep after 30 seconds like you do.

Posted on: 26 July 2017 by David Hendon

I have a 272 and the front panel doesn't wake up unless I open the app and it's the active streamer. Then it sleeps after the 30 secs unless I change something when it wakes for a further 30 secs. I have never seen it wake on its own.

Its seems like a defect & I doubt we will fix it on the forum.    I would send an e-mail to Naim (customer support)  They might well have an idea what it is based on a good description from you,  maybe a factory default reset reset done by yourself,  or it might need to go back to Naim.

Thanks David, that's what I thought.

Mike, as it is essentially working, I'm holding off sending it away as it is the heart of my system which is in daily use, so until it become unusable I think I will have to live with it, although I think I will drop naim tech a line to get their opinion.

thanks for help chaps.
