CDX Problem

Posted by: Denis O on 26 July 2017

My CDX has been giving an intermittent problem for a while now and I'm wondering what's causing it and if it's an easy fix. When loading some CD's I get a "fart" noise and the track counter remains as 2 lines. If I press play, it farts again and the track counter shows Errr.

This doesn't happen with all CD's and doesn't seem to matter if they are brand new or not. This morning I had a brand new version of Imagine arrive and it won't play but an old copy of Madam Butterfly plays perfectly. I put the CD on iTunes via my laptop all OK but it seems a bit silly listening to it on an iPod when I've got a CDX/XPS combo gathering dust.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Denis, call your dealer and get him to send you a new puck. This is the usual solution for this problem.

I agree with Stu, it sounds like the clamp is slipping - probably down to worn rubbers.  As a short-term temporary "fix", you can carefully move the rubber loops around in the clamp body so they stand more proud.  Try it and see...

Thanks for your suggestions & solutions guys. I tried to "shuzz" up the rubber but to no avail. Maybe it's too far gone.

My problem with a dealer is I'm in Corfu for the next couple of months and I'm guessing Naim don't have a dealer in these parts. I'll take a look on the bay and see if someone will do international shipping.

Tom Tom do pucks to mail order. I am sure they could send you one easily enough. Check their website.

I think any Naim dealer would be willing to get a puck for you and post it to you in Corfu, as long as you pay in advance! So a phone call to your usual Naim dealer with your credit card in hand ought to do it! Or there are several Naim dealers in Greece, albeit not Corfu!

Class A usually have them in stock for mail-order.

The problem can often occur with some more recent CD presses where the pressing plant have decided to save material and make the inner section by the hole too thin.  IIRC the thickness of the disc is defined under Red Book standard, so these discs fall outside that standard.  Not much can be done although some in the past tried putting paper spacers underneath to compensate.  A healthy clamp should be OK but an older used clamp can have problems with these discs.

I ordered 1 from Analogue Seductions in Peterborough via their eBay page. They will deliver worldwide and to a PO Box, which is exactly what I need. Should be here by 31st so fingers crossed and I'll be listening to the iPod until then

Thanks guys for all your help.

Just to round this thread off, the new puck arrived this morning and, I'm pleased to say, it's solved the problem. All CD's, including the new copy of Imagine, working as they should.

So thanks to all who contributed and to Analogue Seduction who got the delivery to me here in Corfu in quick time. The iPod has been moved permanently to my outside system; Nait 3 & Castle Sat Speakers.

Good grief! A thread with a happy ending! This place is great when it works. Must keep out of the padded cell....

Happy listening Denis!
