CDX2 and Powerline
Posted by: Romjock on 30 July 2017
Hi folks,
Just about to substitute my 15 year old Linn Ikemi for a new CDX2. The whole system except the Ikemi is Powerlined (252, NDX, 300, NDAC and XPS2 on the NDAC). Question: given that the CDX2 will be used only as a transport, is there any benefit in putting a Powerline on it?
All feedback welcome!
Cheers
George
Yes - not dramatic, but if you can get afford it, it's worth the effort. Quality of the digital transport is still paramount and a good mains cable does help.
When I had my CDX2 connected to my nDAC (with 555PS) all were connected using PowerLines.
Also Naim OCD calls for a Powerline -- all Naim boxes with Powerlines but one?! Hmmm...
Ok I will chime in... why use the CDX2 'only' as a transport? It has a superb DAC and DSP implementation that really excels and bringing out the emotion and enjoyment in recordings? It really is a superb device. The NDAC is fine and enjoyable and yes can play hidef, but with CD, I am not sure I preferred it over the native CDX2, ... so don't dismiss it.. let your new CDX2 burn/settle in and evaluate or at least give yourself a choice.
I for one have my CDX2 playing as itself in my 252DR based system... just a thought? I use stock mains lead on my CDX2, but Powerlines on my NAC and amp.
+1 for trying the CDX2 bare and trying this for a while in your set up to see how you get on with it.
Agree with Simon; I recently purchased a CDX2 and love what it does.
If connected with a hi line and located on a rock solid rack with glass shelf so it can perform at its best, it brings real fun and enjoyment to music unassisted. I also just use the bog standard power cable that came with it.
I have noticed that both the SN2 and CDX2 take a long time to come on song and they both split opinions about whether or not additional power supplies are needed.
I hope you enjoy your new player George - there can't be too many of us left buying a cd player in 2017!
Thanks - well pointed out - I do use a HiLine to connect my CDX2 to my 252 - and I do have my CDX2 on Full Fat Fraim - that seemed to make a huge difference for some bizarre reason

I second Simon's findings - I used to run my CDX2 via an nDAC, but recently it's been used on its own (with an external power supply). In a way I found the sound to be more 'natural' that way.
Thanks for the constructive advice folks. I did wonder about Simon's point and will try it out in native form first. Unfortunately I'll have to wait 5 weeks for the unit to arrive as Naim is prioritising the new Uniti range ahead of black boxes!!!
The equipment is on a 2 stack FFF and the CDX2 will slot in where the Ikemi currently resides. I do have a spare HiLine but it's DIN/RCA (originally for the Ikemi service but subsequently replaced by a DC1 after I acquired the NDAC) and wonder where it should be input as the NDAC sits on the CD input.
Agree that this might be considered to be a Luddite investment but I have continued to enjoy the Ikemi for 15 years. It is now, however, showing its age with random bouts of rejection of my favourite discs. When I get back to NZ I'll find someone to restore it to its former glory and retire it for back up use.
Many thanks again.
Warm (!) regards from Abu Dhabi

This may be of interest but up until recently I've been using a CDX2.2 as a transport with my NDac and 555PS. Both the NDac and 555PS were Powerlined but however much I tried whenever I put a Powline on the CDX2 it just seemed to kill the PRAT a bit. Sure it sounded a bit more refined in both the bass and treble but I'd always end up going back to the standard Naim lead. Very odd because on every other piece of equipment Powerlines had made a massive improvement. I'd definitely give the two an audition if you can?
Thanks Geko. Good experience feedback. I will definitely experiment - when it arrives!! Seems we have a Powerline dilemma. I wonder what Naim thinks? Richard/Phil??
Cheers
