NDX dropouts

Posted by: oferr on 31 July 2017

Yesterday, at last, got my NDX(4.4 update), into my NDAC, driven by SN2. Inscribed to tidal.  Very annoyed by constant dropouts.  Did not succeed to listen to one single song.  Please. do explain me what are dropouts all about.  Is there anything I can do to resolve this problem?

Thank you very much in advance.

Need to know how your have the NDX connected - wired or wireless - then some other info on the network such as wireless hub (router) make model & what line speed.  Some detail on other network devices will be helpful - NAS make/ model - switch yes or no etc

Thank you very much Mike.   NDX wired to router 100 Mhz. no NAS

OK thats simple enough,  not much to go wrong other than the router itself (you didn't say what make/model)   I'm not a Tidal user, so best let the Tidal experts come in.

Make sure the app is the latest software rev.:   iOS is 5.7.3   & Android (I'm not so familiar)  but get the latest available.

Shame you don't have a NAS as thats were NDX is supposed to be & only then does it come alive playing HD music,  which Tidal is not.

Do the dropouts happen over a regular time cycle, or is it a more random pattern? You can see the buffer on the NDX front panel, and if it empties, sound stops, fills up, restarts, in a regular cycle, that suggests that somewhere on your network or online, the line speed is too slow. If the dropouts are more random, that would suggest a different connection problem.

By coincidence I signed up for my free trial with Tidal last week also using an NDX no drop outs whatsoever pleasantly surprised at the sound quality ranging from very good to good.

Hard wired EE Hub to switch then switch to NDX,NAS and Core.

As Mike-B says the NDX does shine when using a NAS or Core but I've found Tidal quite acceptable if slightly variable in quality.

Do you get dropouts streaming HD video from t'internet?

Hi Huge,

Not really a relevant test as streaming HD video would be using a different device (which would have a different buffering schema) and would likely be to a different server (so will have different latancies and different routes across the internet)...

Hi Oferr,

If you set the streaming quality on TIDAL (in the Naim App "Settings" -> "Input Settings" -> "TIDAL" -> "Quality" menu) to "Normal" then does the issue get better / resolve?

Might be easier to work through if you contacted us directly at support@naimaudio.com ...

Cheers

Phil

Thank you all... already wrote an e-m

Hi Phil,

The HD video test was to see if it was latency at his ISP!

I'm aware of the different routes across the internet (and the different packet priorities and QoS), but we know the shared parts of Tidal work fine (i.e. as far the backbone behind the  user's ISP); so if HD video fails that would be a strong indicator of issues in the ISP > ADSL/Fibre/Cable link > Terminal Adapter / router part of the system (it's not proof, but enough to suggest looking into it early on).

I occaisionally get dropouts, if it gets really bad I will reboot my WiFi and turn off the ND5xs for the same time.  If it persists I switch to good old CDs.  Next day it's probably gone.

Hi Huge just for your info there is no QoS across the internet, that is one of the main differentiators between private networks like MPLS and the internet, a public network. All packets have thee same priority irrespective of source and destination and is fundamental principle of current net neutrality.

Hi Simon,

One question for you.  does the type/quality of router have any influence on dropouts?  Do you have any suggestions  for me concerning this dropouts issue?
