Does anyone think that it is possible for Naim to produce a streamer/pre-amp without internal power supply, approaching the level of a 552 pre-amp and NDS streamer/DAC given some of the newer technology?

Might be worth a search of threads with '372' or '572' in them as I think we have been here before.

Still interesting to speculate though.

I would not have thought that a 'dual purpose' box, in this case digital source/preamp, would better their reference single components. However, I for one would be very interested in an updated 272 which ditches the internal PS (using the space to achieve better isolation), uses higher quality components in the preamp section and introduces the latest advances in the digital domain. I really enjoy owning a three box system that pushes the boundaries of SQ.

In a logical "yes/no" way, this will sure be possible, but I doubt if this will be commercially feasable. Outside this forum community there might not be very much interest ...

So all those who speculated the end of the traditional pre-amp were wrong

I asked this when I met the Naim designers last December... essentially the answer was unlikely as Naim felt last December they had gone as far as they currently could in compressing functionality into a single box whilst maintaining appropriate SQ required for a Classic series component. The conversation went onto stress Naim's 'DNA' is about separation and decoupling in its higher end Classic series and higher components... and this was after having listened to some very impressive Uniti prototypes.
