Best Naim configuration with existing turntable and a new Naim streaming device

Posted by: Arturek on 03 August 2017

Hello Guys,

I have got turntable, CD player and loudspeakers.

I need new Naim power amplifier, pre-amplifier (could be integrated) and streaming.

What would be the best configuration?

I need to confess you, that I already have purchased NAP-250, N-272, StageLine and FlatCap XS, but now I see, that Naim dealer gave me a wrong advise. Streaming and amplification is perfect, but I am not able to connect turntable. I believe, exist simpler configuration to achieve my requirement.

I have no direct experience but see the thread below, which may help with your current equipment:

You should have the correct equipment ... you just need the right 4 pin to 5 pin DIN cable.

Just follow the guidance in the Stageline manual... connect the 4-5 interconnect ( the thin grey one) between the socket D on the Flatcap and the 272's analogue din input - it only has one so you can't go wrong. The 5-5 snaic between the Flatcap and preamp in the picture is not relevant with a 272.

The Forum at its Best!

I would still pay that dealer a visit!

The equipment will work fine if it's wired up properly, so the dealer's advice was perfectly fine. That said, if it's a Rega deck and cartridge, a Rega phonostage needs only one box rather than two. I find the Stageline underwhelming, and probably would gave got something else. But that's probably not helpful at this point, with the equipment bought.

Thanks Guys for your attention.

I'm waiting for 4 to 5 DIN cable and I will see how it will work.

I've got another concern. I've got Denon DL-80MC cartridge and Naim advised StageLine N. I'm not quite sure about it. Shouldn't be better S?

The DL80 is a high output MC, so the N is the right one. They are pretty old and basic and I wonder if something better might be in order. Depends on the deck of course.

I agree with you. Cartridge is quiet vintage. Turntable is vintage as well, it's Denon DP-47F. It's old but in my opinion beautiful.  :-)

I have got a picture, but I don't know how to attach it.

If you discover how to insert pictures in this forum you can resolve the stageline / flatcap connection aş well...

Both are quite complicated but possibile

I did both and felt very proud ( for my 272)

Something has gone awry with this thread, possibly an error caused by posting of a picture: the original post is now overlaid with what appears to be possibly a specification for a cartidge. This is as viewed on an iPad.Not sur who posted it (Emre?) or using what tool, but clearly something somewhere has caused a formatting fault.

[@mention:1566878603942595] can you see it and pass on as appropriate?

I see it and I can't seem to fix it.  It's weird because it's not in the opening post.  It seems to have overlaid the thread somehow.

OK, found it.  It was in Arturek's second post. It was a cartridge spec copied and pasted but along with some very odd formatting. I've removed it. Very strange...

Anyway, back on topic, I remember the Denon DP-47F, as a friend had one.  It was a pretty looking deck and very easy to use.  However, performance was pretty middling - an original Rega Planar left it for dead and was a revelation by comparison.

Arturek, it may be worth us knowing how you posted tbat image  so those of us yet to adopt an alternative to Photobucket don't follow your lead!

It happened during my second post. I used to try to copy and paste cartridge specification. Nothing happened on 2nd poste window, therefore I just put cartridge name and type. When I pressed Post Reply button, I found my cartridge specification covered my 1st post. Very odd.

Richard,

I'm thinking about a new turntable, but I have spent a lot of money for my new Naim. CD player is waiting in a queue for upgrading. I use vintage Yamaha CDX-993. Plays lovely, but when I used to test Naim CD5 XS, sound was much better and I am thinking about CDX2. Should works perfect with my 250 & 272. Turntable I'm not sure yet, but I thought about Linn.

Very nice table that put many modern tables to blame

With a 272 you don't really need a better CD player. Just rip the albums to a NAS. The money saved will buy an XPS, a better turntable or a good holiday. And you won't have all those horrid CDs cluttering up your house.

Oh no! Hungryhalibut. I love my LPs and CDs. They're like my kids. I love keep piece of art in my hands, when I listen to the music.  Most records remind me something or someone and some of CDs as well. I just love them. Nothing and anyone is able to change my mind. :-) Streaming is just radio, nothing more and never replace piece of vinyl or plastic and cover.  :-)

Which rather makes a 272 an interesting choice. It's all personal of course. You should try some high res downloads though, as they can take things to a new level, so long as they are properly recorded and mastered.
