Radio 3 lossless

Posted by: MusicRoom on 06 August 2017

As we all know, R3 is trialing Radio 3 using FLAC lossless.  We can currently listen to the Proms better on our PCs using Firefox (?!)  In the rating they ask you to complete, they ask if they should make it permanent (?!!!!).

Of course they should make it permanent!  What a silly question!  Is there an alternative now that it's possible?

Now that 70+ Mb broadband is becoming more and more available they should be thinking soon of 24 bit 96KHz

Dear Auntie.  Please keep your foot on the accelerator.

Yup, it's all over!  Now all we have to do, is wait and see if dear old Auntie, in her wisdom, considers the high quality music broadcast on Radio 3 is important enough to be streamed as well as she is able.  We know it is possible; is it now viable for the Beeb to make it permanent.

If there's anyone out there with sufficient clout, for Pete's sake start jumping up and down!

Worth leaving feedback via the various channels the BBC have for this, just in case they ever read them. Hopefully, they might see this as a good way to appease criticism of the FM shutdown - personally, I would take this any day, rather than have an FM tuner plus an aerial.

I've Tweeted @bbcradio3. It's up there with a NAT01, and I say this with some astonishment - everyone should want this!

P.S. And they "liked" it so someone out there took note.

^  The trouble is, Gary, they will probably use your comment as further evidence that FM can be run down. The problem being that some of us, me included, are entirely delighted with FM on our NATs and don't want anything else.

Yes, I know I'll get slagged off for this.

I own a NAT01. It's probably my favourite bit of kit ever. I was dreading FM shut-off. However, I could find no reliable difference between the FM source and the FLAC stream and so, if they shut off FM (which they surely will at some point) there is hope beyond a shonky lossy stream.

Ok, thank you.

Gary, I agree with you. This BBC FLAC trial has brought hope for great quality radio beyond FM and my NAT01
