Supernait upgrade advice
Posted by: themrock on 08 August 2017
Hello, to everyone
Some month ago, i changed my loudspeakers from Naim Ariva to Dali Epicon 6, that was a huge step forward.
So my system at the moment is Naim Supernait, Naim Supercap2, Naim-DAC, Auralic Aries Femto as Streamer, Dali Epicon 6.
Now i think its time to upgrade the Supernait, my target is Nac 282/Nap 250 DR and my Supercap.
My first question is, makes it sense, because my Supercap is not DR at the moment?
Because i cant afford to buy 282 and 250 together at the moment, what makes more sense
a) SN/282/SC and later the 250
b)SN/250/SC and later the 282
and the last step would be to upgrade the SC to DR.
Thank you for your advice.
Hi [@mention:1566878603928256]. Which ever route you take it will sound great! I planned to upgrade my SN to 282/250dr. A 250dr came along and on the end of the SN (with HC DR) it sounded brilliant. I'd go for whichever box you get a deal on first. I've since changed the SN for a 272 and I'm dabbling with streaming.
a).
I'd go for NAP 250 first.
And then see what comes up: 252 or 282. You may be able to pick up either at a surprisingly good price.
There seems to be plenty of second-hand 250s of all ages and variants out there at the moment. Bargains to be had?
i have a 282 in my system and love the focus and detail it brings to the music so either 282 or 250 will enhance your system
also like the comment re 272 as source, so you could as alternative look at 272/250/SC in place of the 282 - the main reason I went 282 is i play 50/50 vinyl so 282 made real sense - my other source is NDX
The 282 and SN do have a similar presentation to my ears. If you like how the SN sounds you'll love the 282. The 272 is different. It's a lighter presentation, or it may just be that way as I'm using its internal ps.
Whatever you decide, the good news is you will not be disappointed, it's a win win situation .....
Maybe as has been suggested, see what comes up first at the best price

A Supercap can't power a 272, you would need to swap it for an XPS.

I'd say SN2 works better as a pre-amp with a separate power amp, than as a power-amp with an external pre-amp.....
don't know about SN2, but 282 shows SN1 a very clean pair of heels as a preamp.
I would get the preamp first.
Option c) Wait until you can afford to get both the 282 and 250 at the same time.
This would be my choice, and one which i'll get to once i've XPS'd the NDX and Superline'd the P9.
Thx for all the answers.
In the meantime i found a thread, where somebody asked a similar question direct to Naim.
There advice, was he should buy first the 250, because the pre-amp part of the SN is very similar to the 282.
One of the most significant upgrades I made was moving from a 202 to a 282. The 282 is possibly the best VFM pre amps in the range IMHO. I used mine with a Supercap and this paring was superb. I am one of those who recons that the Supercap gets more out of the 282 than the Hicap does. So your end game makes sense to me. It should do, as I owned the same amplification as that you are planning. The only area I would give thought to is the source, namely the streamer. I used your planned amplification with a bare NDX and I would suggest the Naim streamer will complement and optimise the rest of the system.
I realise funds are an issue (aren't they always) and I am suggesting an additional step with the NDX. However you can plan these things until you are blue in the face. So often I planned something but as an alternative presented itself at a good price, and my plans changed. I would suggest you do give some thought to the streamer side of things. Of course you could make a radical change and go for a 272 and 250DR and add a XPSDR at a a later date. And as usual, demo as much kit as you can at home before making decisions.
Either the 282 or 250 will be a great upgrade with the SN. See what comes up first at the right price. Don't worry that your Supercap is not DR, you can do that later if you feel it is worthwhile and when funds permit. Oh, and give the NDX some consideration too.
Hi NIGELB, thanks for your advice.
Indeed i did an audition at my local hifi-dealer between the NDX and the combination Auralic Aries Femto/Naim DAC and for my ears the Auralic Aries Femto/Naim DAC sounded much better.
Imho the Auralic Aries Femto in combination with the Naim DAC is the best you can buy, for that money.

Fair comment, and you did the leg work to evaluate the relative merits of streamers. So you have your source sorted. You can't really go wrong with your plans for the amplification, just see if the 282 or 250DR comes up first, as an ex-dem or preloved deal will always give you the best VFM. Even better, this kind of kit is almost always well looked after and come run in. As I said I would go for the 282 first but you can't always plan these things exactly.
Enjoy the music and good luck.
Its me again, in the meantime i got a great offer for a pre- owned Nac 282 from 2005 and a Nap 250 DR from 2016.
So my above " problems" are solved.
In the future i will bring the Nac 282 to service and will make service and DR upgrade to my Supercap 2 , which is from 2008.
What would you do first, the older one is the Nac 282, but i think most improvement will make the DR update for the Supercap.
