Favourite Instrument Listening on the HiFi.

I've always been fond of the mournful sound of the mellotron. Used on many late 60's hits but probably best known for its use in Strawberry Fields. My favourite mellotron track has to be "Changes" by Black Sabbath.

By far, a piano.

Piano....

Steel-strung acoustic guitar, for me. The soprano sax, in the right hands. Both on "Cherokee Louise" by Joni Mitchell on the album "Night Ride Home" (Joni on guitar and the incomparable Wayne Shorter on soprano sax).

And NOT the bagpipes under any circumstances.

For novelty value, try and track down some recordings of Jerry Murad's Harmonicats. Try Monti "Czardas". I never knew a "mouth organ" could go so low. 

Dearly beloved chooses percussion, there are of course Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and many others but for variety, virtuosity and FUN, seek out The Hut People. You will have to buy the CDs to get the full list oc what it played.

orgue hammond, guitar, drums and fender rhodes, bass and soprano sax, voice...difficult to choose.

Musicians:  doctor lonnie smith: hammond organ.  /. jack dejohnette: drums.  /. wayne shorter: soprano sax. herbie hancock: fender rhodes, piano.   john scofield: guitar...  and a lot of choices for bass( avishai cohen, paul jackson, ...)  and voices( joni mitchell, aretha, liv warfield, al jarreau....).    

Mandolin (multiple versions) - give a listen to Sam Bush (bluegrass)

You will also hear banjo, guitar, dobro, harmonica, bass, cello, mandocello

A look through the jazz/classical section will also have several duets, trios, quartet, quintet that will be playing various horns, strings, bass, piano which may gives great clarity to a instrument sound.

Martin  D28  or 1959 Gibson Les Paul,  in the right hands.

A vintage Fender Strat played through a tube amp. In the hands of the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, John Frusciante, George Harrison, or Bonnie Raitt it becomes pure aural velvet no matter what the replay mode.

Piano - Leszek Mozdzer (great contemporary Polish classical / jazz pianist).

Guitar wise I love the Rickenbacker 330.

Also have a soft spot for bells on recordings and marimba and cymbals on stuff

i like very much his album with lars danielsson and forget the other guy...but his solos albums are so boring and not creative, i feel. A very good pianist but poor composer, just my opinion...

yes, i have this album, very good. When he plays with other he is more interesting.  Another very fine pianist , polish, Marcin Wasilewski, plays with Manu Katche on two albums, and the recording quality is top too...

I discovered also a polish jazz group: the new trio:  i love it!

I don't have much recordings, but you can find it on Great European Organs, volume 12 - old fashioned interpretation of music or get the far better recording of Mendelssohs organ sonata's by Jos van der Kooy. Both are on Spotify.

When I was student, this was the instrument where I had lessons therefore it is a bit 'painful' to hear it on my Naim setup. Far, far away from the real deal. The instrument is massive. Pushing one key transforms the church and fills it with sound. Playing the instrument is like driving the best sports car. You feel you own limitations.

I never got why organs are doomed, and e.g. Stradivarius violins are appreciated. The cultural value of an organ like this is much higher - i.m.o of course, but its a quite defendable statement.

I used the image just as a pars pro toto. I know much more wonderful instruments.

And guitar and drums sounds very good on my Ovators ...

I love the sound of a zink (or cornetto). It is a medieval/baroque instrument. It sounds like a trompet but with soft edges, not as sharp/harsh like a trompet.

At some day i will learn to play the cornetto!
