Used Supernait or new XS2

Posted by: Nina on 15 August 2017

I am thinking of trying a Naim amp again and I can buy a good used and serviced Supernait at a reasonable price or I could buy a new or lightly used XS2

I only use cd so the inbuilt Dac in the Supernait might come in handy

Do the two amps sound much the same?

Thanks for any help

Nina can perfectly make decisions. No one is here trying to impose an opinion on Nina. It's not help, this is a pub - a social platform.

It's the first time I read the SN being called nearly horrible. I'm happy that Naim has a dark side: I have had 3 SNs and 3 XSs, and presently I'm sticking with the nearly horrible. What really looks amazing to me, bordering on astonishing, is – apart the use of words – the amount of time some dedicate to such a question as the OP has posed. Ha-ha Max

I notice you contribute to the thread you obviously find too long

Wonder how long a thread describing all your box shifting would be ?

Not that I'm against box shift, I'm doing this myself

And yes, I really didn't like the original SN but don't let this bother you too much, we certainly have different room, mains, cables, kit, taste and so on, actually I stressed it was imo and what matters in life is not other peoples amp taste

Have a nice day and great picture btw, reminded me I did cheat death twice the past two years, so a happy man

I'm struggling to read the notes attached to the cadaver. XS2 or SN2.

Also is the choice as a longing, or the cause of death ???

Sorry if this thread has got too long for some but I guess it's not all my own doing

The original thread was to gain some thoughts about which of the two amps most people would go for but has since changed a bit as I got both the XS2 and SN2 (not the original SN) delivered for comparison

a) Yes, how could I differently? I counted my reply in, though.

b) It would occupy some 25/30 lines in a single post. As I have written a lot of times (I'm flattered that you know my Naim history so well), I experimented with my money, my time, without ever asking for other people's opinions.

c) Good. It's a nice pastime for us childish, under-developed anal subjects.

d) I have bought the SN three times: do you really think I can be bothered by someone I don't know, who has the nickname of a mouthwash, who's telling me not to worry because in spite of his opinion the SN might be a good product after all?

e) sorry for my very nasty personality. It has kept me alive for 64 years, though, and I am sort of attached to it.  Yes, the picture is nice. I am sincerely happy, instead, to know that you have cheated death twice in the past two years; yet, you may win a few battles but in the end we all lose the war. But you know it.

My best

Max

Perfectly normal after 64 years.  Onset is normally around 50 years but it frequently goes completely unnoticed except for everyone else around the person.  In UK its called Grumpy Old Man, its not so much an illness,  more an elevated plateau of life.

Mike,

Is the grumpiness induced by a lack of oxygen at the elevated altitude, and there a female equivalent?

Mike,  Is the grumpiness induced by a lack of oxygen at the elevated altitude, and there a female equivalent?

Although not the underlying cause, it is exacerbated by lack of oxygen;  with some its caused by airway restrictions when hunched up sleeping in a chair,  it can be caused by irregular breathing between quaffs of real ale.  A rarefied form identified with audiophiles in particular is caused by the irregular breathing patterns when huffing & puffing trying to prove they know more & better than all others in futile attempts at winning arguments on forums.

There is no female equivalent,  its not possible to transgender in humans.    A similar condition presented in females is actually unrelated & is just simple miserable demena.  There is no real cure but it can be relieved by shopping expeditions,  not actually shopping in many cases,  just looking.  There is a danger with over dosing on this treatment as manic depression can result if the patient finds desirable clothes that are not available in her size.

I once had a colleague having the name 'Advil' - he gave a lot of stress to the team.

Ok, I've been unpleasant.

Perol, I apologize about mouthwash but it sort of compensates for calling my amp 'near horrible'.

Mike-B, I couldn't understand almost anything in your last post: this shows the difference between being really part of the British side of the community or not.

I really, really must stop giving so much of my time to all this: I am not yet retired, and won't be for a while. Plus, I'll have positive things to do.

My head is aching and making noise. I don't know if I am cheating death, but something is wrong with me these days.

Better giving myself to a different occupation for some time. BTW, if the Nait XS had the size of the SN, I would perhaps choose the XS.

Goodbye

M.

Forgive me Max,  please please please,  you have not been unpleasant, far from it, your posts are a joy - well most of them anyway.     My post was a UK-centric joke & I should have realised as Italian you would not be tuned in to it.   It helps if you've watched a UK TV series called 'Grumpy Old Men' & then more help can be had if you spend each evening in the pub playing cribbage with like minded other grumpy old men.

Apology accepted, thanks

(But I still don't like that amp )

Mouthwash is a great nickname, thanks for creating it dedicated to me, I think I will use it in future

Perhaps I should look into reserving the mouthwash.com if not allready taken

Whether you like the SN1 or not all depends on the source, speakers, cables, environment, expectations, setup, power supply used (HC transforms the SN1), the room.

I really like the SN1 with a Hicap, but quite good without a Hicap, and with a good source !

But hey ho life goes on.

Moderated Post:  Analog, I've edited for you so it reads better (and avoids crossing forum AUP)...

Max has somewhere indicated the SN1 being 'Teutonic'. I like that definition, it is very much like that.

Furthermore, the corpse on photo above does not like an amplifier, but could be someone hit by an amplifier. I used to throw amplifiers out of my window when some salesperson rings my bell, but I've run out of cheap chinese plastic amps. It now starts to be dangerous here.

Tonight I replaced the XS2 and put the SN2 back in the system

I won't do any serious listening until tomorrow evening once it's had time to settle in a bit

I have a suspicion that the SN2/CD5XS/Hugo might jell quite nicely as the Hugo has lifted the performance of the CD5XS to another level

Posted on: 23 October 2017 by seakayaker

.....so how did the XS 2 with the CD5 XS work out?   ......any comments on performance.

Hi seakayaker

I first tried the XS2 with my current cd transport and valve dac and was very impressed with the performance.  Musical, easy to listen to with plenty of detail.  I then put the CD5XS in place of the transport and dac and initially was not very impressed as it lacked detail, especially of smaller/quieter pieces of the music.  I hope that makes some sense !  It did however sound very musical

Once I received my Hugo I put that on the output of the CD5XS and the sound is simply amazing.  However, I think, with all the extra detail and naturalness the Hugo brings that the SN2 will reveal even more of that upgrade

I am pretty sure the Hugo has raised the performance far enough for the SN2 to be a better match

We will see in the next few days

Simon in Suffolk uses hugo 1 with 252/250.2.

It’s a very good source but chord has raised the bar with Hugo 2
