Used Supernait or new XS2
Posted by: Nina on 15 August 2017
I am thinking of trying a Naim amp again and I can buy a good used and serviced Supernait at a reasonable price or I could buy a new or lightly used XS2
I only use cd so the inbuilt Dac in the Supernait might come in handy
Do the two amps sound much the same?
Thanks for any help
Can anyone tell me if the warranty is valid for a 2nd user item? Not the extended 5 year parts warranty as I know that is only for the original purchaser. I believe the standard warranty is 2 years which can then be extended, for parts, to an extra 3 years
I think I've shelved the idea of a SN2 as I am really enjoying the XS2 in my system
The biggest shock is that I don't find it at all harsh, even compared to my valve amps, not especially 'smooth' either... just about right to my ears..
Whether NACA5 will bring any improvement I have no idea but I will let everyone know once I have the cable

I have no idea Christopher but I just can't imagine a CD5XS competing with my Audio Note Dac, but I might be wrong

Ok. I had Audio Note Dac One with their cdp. Then I bought a Naim cdp with my Naim Nait. Made good audio sense to me.
Thanks Chirstopher
Which Naim cd do you have? and sorry to ask so many questions but which amp do you own?
So do you really believe a CD5XS will better my AN Dac? Mine is the Dac 1 1x Signature
If so I will 'get one in' as it were

Please check my profile* or any member's profile if you want to see what I or they use. Back then I had a Nait 5 and CD5.

The more I use the XS2 the more I love it...... what a great little amp it is....
Ain't nothing little about it.

So true Christopher
I'm just loving it to be honest
I did not believe I would like it after my super smooth valve amps and was truly expecting it to be rather harsh sounding but it absolutely does not sound harsh at all. Quite a smooth and silky sounding amp to be honest
In the past I did audition a Nait 5 (can't remember which one but I think it was the i, italic one) and I did indeed find that harsh sounding but the XS2 has a very 'grown up' sound to it and nothing like the 5 at all
It is so nice I could listen to it for hours on end with absolutely no fatigue at all
The chap I purchased the XS2 from 'upgraded' to a SN2 and he does not like the SN2 at all.... indeed he says that the SN2 is very harsh sounding... he tells me that he never found the XS2 harsh and that's exactly what I am experiencing
As I don't want to unpack the remote, it is still sealed and unused, would it be ok to leave the XS2 on without dimming the display? Will there be any harm done?
I leave my XS 2/ND5 XS on all the time and the light green Naim lighting acts as a dim nightlight if I pass through the living room at night. No harm at all.....
Super thanks Seakayaker... so I will just leave it on as it is..
The XS2 seems to love the rest of my system. As it is now late I am listening at very low levels and it still sounds very good indeed which might be because my LV's are so easy to drive, who knows..
It's been a while since I listened to music this late.. I am just loving the XS2.. any thought of 'upgrading' to the SN2 has completely gone as I am so happy with the XS2
I don't miss anything, sound wise, of my valve amps with the XS2 in my system
The overriding experience of the XS2 is of a 'smooth and silky' amp that is very musical and 'foot tapping' even at the low volumes I am currently listening to
It's late and I don't want to annoy my lovely neighbours
I can't imagine that the NACA5 cable will improve on the sound I am currenlty experiencing but I will let everyone know what I think of it when I receive it and have a few hours on it
I have 14 days to test out the NACA5 cable so no risk really in trying it out..

Don't mean to put a damper on this love fest you're having with the XS2, but I have been an owner of a SN2 for a little while now, and I can say that it never has sounded harsh in any way, detailed, airy, and transparent, but never harsh, at least not in my room.

I'm rather labouring this, Nina, but both are Naim.
Glad you are loving the XS2.

I now have the NACA5 cable in to try
As far as the SN2 goes, well I just couldn't resist it so I have a SN2 coming on a trial basis, as I am away next week it will be shipped the week after when I get back
If you find the SN2 better, perhaps you should also trial a 202 / 200DR (or even a 282 / 200) as well, otherwise you're in the same boat again... still wondering!

Actually Huge I know that won't happen as I am only interested in integrated amps so thought it best just to try the top one that Naim currently produce as I am so enjoying the XS2

That's a shame because the 272/250DR or a 282/200 are both a massive step up in quality.
But if they're not what you want... well they're just not what you want.

I know everybody hears things differently, if it's any consolation, I recently did a home demo of the 202/200DR combo and also the 282 250-2 DR combo. I purchased the SN2.
I felt that the SN2 bettered the 202 200DR combo, and while I preferred the presentation of the 282 250-2 DR combo, I felt the difference in price didn't off set the difference in sound quality. It was actually a lot closer in sound quality than I was expecting between the SN2 and the 282 250-2 DR combo.

That's very interesting Badlands. I look forward to getting the SN2. My holiday next week is delaying the delivery
