Used Supernait or new XS2

Posted by: Nina on 15 August 2017

I am thinking of trying a Naim amp again and I can buy a good used and serviced Supernait at a reasonable price or I could buy a new or lightly used XS2

I only use cd so the inbuilt Dac in the Supernait might come in handy

Do the two amps sound much the same?

Thanks for any help

I think my NACA5 cable is wired up wrongly...  the ridge side starts off on the Naim plugs in the amp with black and the speaker end is red on the same ridged side...  I know it will probably make little difference but my ocd hates this kind of thing

Mine are the wrong way too, but they're wrong end to end, the ridge should be on the positive.  In my case I couldn't be bothered to send them back or query the supplier, so just wired everything up backwards end to end.  In your case you can leave the amp as is, and just swap the speaker end round.

Also, check both channels, otherwise you could end up out of phase, more ocd.

Well I've just unscrewed one of the Naim plugs and what a shoddy job they made of them.. there are strands that are not connected via solder at all and just hanging there... I can solder much better myself and I'm only a 'girly'   ....  how can anyone be happy to charge good money for this kind of awful work?

Hi,

Oh dear.

Yep, it sounds like to me you need to send them back and ask for someone who can do a proper competent job or don't bother...

It will effect sound quality massively, settle for nothing less.

Well, that's a different matter.  I had my cables checked by my 'proper' dealer, and they said it was a good job on the solder, and went into quite a bit of detail about it.  Aside from the ridge being the wrong side on both sets they were spot on.  It would appear that yours should be returned along with some fierce words.  Were they purchased from a Naim dealer?

My thoughts exactly Stephen they are very shoddy indeed

Anyone on here had a good service for terminated NACA5 in UK?  which company ?

It's important that the soldering is spot on. I would return the badly soldered stuff and purchase some from a dealer who can do the job properly.

Yes from a Naim dealer

I will be returning them and I won't give them a chance to rectify it but only to refund as I am of the belief that if they are happy to send out such rubbish I don't want to deal with them and certainly not give them a second chance

Which company did you use for your terminated cable in the UK that makes a good job of it?

Posted on: 30 August 2017 by Mike-B

Nina,  your posts make me both angry & sad that a dealer can't do this basic job or at least have the wisdom to give it to a local electrical service shop who can.   If I were you I would go back & demand they have all the defects corrected.     I would do it for you for free if you live anywhere near me.

I bought mine from HifiGear, and as I said the solder was very professional.  There is still the fact that they were technically the wrong way around, but at least they were consistent end to end.  The company even has this (see link below) detailing everything they learned about making up NACA5 cables after training from Naim.  You'll notice the notes saying which way round the ridge should be, but the notes are the wrong way around.  That said, I am not convinced that alone makes any difference, but likewise, ocd meant I had to swap it all around anyway.

Thanks for the offer Mike-B, very kind indeed, I'm in Hampshire, UK

Yes I also believe it is a very "basic job", the other problem is that they did not split the speaker end enough to actually stretch out to easily plug them in... nightmare...  but I will not be giving them another go at it and just return the cable for a refund as I don't want to deal with dealers like that

It's a shame that Naim doesn't supply the cable terminated properly from source

I will protect Naim, and the dealer, and not mention who made this shoddy job as I don't think there is any mileage in it.  I might contact Naim directly though and spill the beans, can't make my mind up on that one though

That is truly not acceptable. A call to Salisbury might even be in order...I am sure Naim expects better than that from their dealers.

And what is the process for getting a link authorised?

Thanks Mike-B so very kind of you

As you say we are not too close

I think I might contact Naim directly just to let them know what a very shoddy job it was and maybe get an idea from them who I should use to get a proper job done

Posted on: 30 August 2017 by Nina

Unless there is someone from Naim on here that can let me know who I should use...

Quite right too! Remember that Naim supply a pair of their own banana plugs when you buy an amp, so you may need to desolder yours to retrieve them, or get hold of a new set.

i have contacted the Store Manager directly and have suggested it must have been handed to someone rather 'ham-fisted' to complete

The NACA5 was ordered quite separately from my amp/s so both amps will still have their Naim plugs intact

Hi Nina,

In case you've missed this.

Here is the guide from the frequently asked Q&A section -

https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...-andamp-f-connection

Thanks Stephen...  Yes I did read, and digest that, and to be honest my solder joints look absolutely nothing like the ideal of Richard Dane's picture and much worse than the other pictures, at least these do include all the conductors within their solder joint which is more than can be said about mine

However.....

I thought I would at least try out the NACA5 cable in the sytem, well it's not my fault they were badly executed is it?

I am actually amazed that such a 'basic' looking cable could work as well as it does especially baring in mind my normal cable is TQ Ultra Black which is pretty expensive stuff (don't worry I paid nowhere near the asking price for this cable)
